Wasn't sure exactly how to title this thread so I just said "Lyrics".
The porpose is excerpts from songs or the chorus from a song or songs that alicit thought and make a statement and or strike a chord within ones mind heart and soul. IF ya know what I mean.
Something said that is really cool and or meaningful.

Not the whole song but just part of it......a few lines or verse.

"Who's to say where the wind will take you
Who's to say what it is will break you
I don't know, which way the wind will blow
Who's to know when the time has come around
I don't wanna see you cry
But I know that this is not goodbye."

'Kite' U2 from the production...."All that you can't leave behind"

One in particular always struck me...the very end of the Frank Sinatra version of "One For My Baby", where he sings, the road is long. I've never heard anyone interpret complete heartbreak and the devastation that accompany it like Frank Sinatra could. You have to have been there to understand where it's coming from, and he did it so well. He LIVED it so well...

Ditto for "Angel Eyes", as well. 'Scuse me, while I...disappear.

From Gonn'a Try and Love Again,by the Eagles-She was dancing by in time,and the moves she made so fine,like the music that surround's her.Always reminds me of someone i knew a long time ago,sigh.

"Just one look into your eyes
One look and I'm crying
'Cause you're so beautiful

Just one kiss and I'm alive
One kiss and I'm ready to die
'Cause you're so beautiful"

"This world is a cruel place
and we're here only to lose
so before life tears us apart let
death bless me with you

Won't you die tonight for love
Baby join me in death "

^ HIM rules.

Hatebreed - Mark My Words

"I was so blind. I couldn't see the truth. I was unable to see how my life
was being used. To be something so miniscule. Everything i thought was so
definite, I thought was so real was thrown away and will be remembered among
unpaling hatred.
[chorus]
Consider my suffering. Through all your pain.
Remember my face. I'm digging your grave. Since when was so sacred, turning
into something so wrong. something so important to me. Cheapened and
exploited. I won't be that way, I can't, I can't be that way again. I can't,
I won't, I will never let it.
[repeat chorus]
For the rest of your fucking
life you will mark my words."

There's a song by Triumph , a couple parts I've seemed to hold on to .....Fight the good fight every moment , every minute , everyday , fight the good fight every moment it's your only way ........... Your the master of your own destiny so give and take the best that you can ...............

Great green globs of greasy grimer gopher guts, mutilated monkey feet, little pretty dirty beaks. Its all mixed up with all-purpose porpise puss...I made it just for you!

Been thinking about this myself...

TickledToDeath, and am glad you asked the question.

I started wondering about the impact lyrics have on me at various times for various reasons yesterday when, for the first time, I heard repetitive airings throughout the day of The Calling's "Wherever You Will Go" and wasn't reduced to tears. Some lines that fit different times/aspects of my life:

“...you’re everything that I’ve become, in every word I say. I need a bell, book and candle to keep your ghost away...” Boo Hewerdine (sung by Eddi Reader), “Bell, Book, & Candle”

“...You hurt me more than I ever would have imagined. You made my world stand still. And, in that stillness there was a freedom I’d never felt before...” Sarah McLachlan, “Plenty” (Fumbling Towards Ecstasy)

“... it felt like I was disappearing...” Joshua Kadison, “Invisible Man” (Painted Desert Serenade)

“...I've been there, done that, I ain't lookin' back...” Jon Bon Jovi, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home?”

“...I am extraordinary, if you'd ever get to know me...I’m just your ordinary, average, everyday sane psycho (supergoddess)...” Liz Phair, “Extraordinary"

“...Que sera, sera. What will be, will be...” Jay Livingston and Ray Evans (sung most memorably by Doris Day), “Que Sera, Sera”

As to the beautiful lyrics by Aaron Kamin and Alex Band: initial, frequent airplay of "Wherever You Will Go" coincided with the death of a beloved friend who left behind one child. I imagined him speaking similar words to her because she was his top priority. He wanted always to be able to protect her and to be there when she needed him.

These lyrics

were written and recorded by a personal friend of mine who is no longer among us;
“When I’m Gone” by Phil Ochs.

There’s no place in this world where I’ll belong when I’m gone;
And I won’t know the right from the wrong when I’m gone;
And you won’t find me singin’ on this song when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

And I won’t feel the flowin’ of the time when I’m gone;
All the pleasures of love will not be mine when I’m gone;
My pen won’t pore a lyric line when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

And I won’t breath the bracin’ air when I’m gone;
And I can’t even worry ‘bout my cares when I’m gone;
Won’t be asked to do my share when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

And I won’t be runnin’ from the rain when I’m gone;
And I can’t even suffer from the pain when I’m gone;
Can’t say who’s to praise and who’s to blame when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

I won’t see the goldin’ of the sun when I’m gone;
And the evenin’s and the mornin’s will be one when I’m gone;
Can’t be singin’ louder than the guns when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

All my days won’t be dances of delight when I’m gone;
And the sands will be shifted from my sight when I’m gone;
Can’t add my name into the fight when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

And I won’t be laughin’ at the lies when I’m gone;
And I can’t question how or when or why when I’m gone;
Can’t live proud enough to die when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

There’s no place in this world where I’ll belong when I’m gone;
And I won’t know the right from the wrong when I’m gone;
And you won’t hear me singin’ on this song when I’m gone;
So I guess I’ll have to do it,
I guess I’ll have to do it,
Guess I’ll have to do it while I’m here.

Here's one a wrote myself a couple of years ago. Not all that meaningful, but kind of fun to sing and play.

Times were cool, back in Army school.
I'm talkin Nineteen Seventy-seven.
I was stoned and drunk...a partyin punk
Hangin out with that lunatic Kevin.

We peeped in the back of the female shack
And it was fun up until we got caught! :shock:
They had us cold, so we decided to bolt
Kevin got away but I did not!

(CHORUS)
They got me in a Tickle Tackle!
They all called dibs on my feet and my ribs
Cause it's a Tickle Tackle!
And I like a dummy said "Don't tickle my tummy!"
But they Tickle Tackled!
They tickled so hard, I was emotionally scarred
From the Tickle Tackle!

They Tickle. They Tackle
I giggle and cackle...Oh yeah!!

Later that year we were pounding some beer
In a joint that was loaded with "'tang."
I told a hundred blonde jokes to some neighboring blokes
And we laughed till the last call rang.

As the guys abscond, I'm surrounded by blondes
There was nobody else in the bar.
They gave me the look, so I decided to book
But I never really got that far.

(CHORUS)
They got me in a Tickle Tackle!
They pulled off my shoes, and then my feet were abused.
It was a Tickle Tackle!
They showed me no mercy, reaching under my jersey
In a Tickle Tackle!
And mercy sake! They wouldn't give me a break
Throughout the Tickle Tackle!

They tickle. I giggle.
They tackle. I cackle, oh yeaahhh!!!

Each time I find myself laying...flat on my face....
I just pick myself...up...and get..back...in the ra-ace.....That's life!

Rob

Now I learned that song a bit differently:
Great big globs of greasy grimy gopher guts, mutilated monkey meat, chopped up parakeet, french-fried eyeballs floating in a stew of blood, oops I dropped my spoon but I got my straw *slurp* aaahhh!

I'm changing my post and putting Avalon's newest song (not on CD, but you can get it on iTunes or Napster)

For Freedom, written by Matt Moran

Somewhere a trumpet sounds in the night
A soldier is standing there
It’s calling him out to the Stars and the Stripes
It’s calling him God knows where

He kisses the ones he loves goodbye
And leaves in the dead of night
For freedom he’ll heed the call, leave all he knows
And for freedom he’ll stand and fight

And somewhere a man and wife can’t believe
They’re waving their girl goodbye
For gone are the days of pigtails and curls
And candlelit lullabies

If they had their way she’d stay young forever
And never be far from home
But freedom has drawn her heart to danger’s shore
And for freedom they’ll let her go

And somewhere a thunderous crash in the night
It echoes all through the hills
Though many escape its wrath and its rage
A soldier lies wounded still

Remembering the land he loves, he cries
I love you with all my might
For freedom said I’m her son whatever comes
And for freedom I’ll say goodbye

And somewhere beneath the stars and the sky
Our flag is still standing there
She bled and she brought one land under God
A promise He'll lead us there

She’s carried the lives of those before us
She’s buried the bold and brave
For freedom she holds our hopes and heads up high
And for freedom she’ll ever wave

Touch me in the morning
Then just walk away
We don't have tomorrow
But we had yesterday

Wasn't it me who said that
Nothing good's gonna last forever?
And wasn't it me who said
Let's just be glad for the time together?
It must've been hard to tell me
That you've given all you had to give
I can understand you're feeling that way
Everybody's got their life to live

Well, i can say goodbye in the cold morning light
But i can't watch love die in the warmth of the night
If i've got to be strong
Don't you know i need to have tonight when you're gone?
'till you go i need to lie here and think about
The last time that you'll touch me in the morning
Then just close the door
Leave me as you found me, empty like before

Wasn't it yesterday
We used to laugh at the wind behind us?
Didn't we run away and hope
That time wouldn't try to find us (didn't we run)
Didn't we take each other
To a place where no one's ever been?
Yeah, i really need you near me tonight
'cause you'll never take me there again
Let me watch you go
With the sun in my eyes
We've seen how love can grow
Now we'll see how it dies

If i've got to be strong
Don't you know i need to have tonight when you're gone?
'till you go i need to hold you until the time
Your hands reach out and touch me in the morning
(mornings where blue and gold and we could feel one another living)
Then just walk away
(we walked with a dream to hold and we could take what the world was giving)
We don't have tomorrow,
(there's no tomorrow here, there's only love and the time to chase it)
But we had yesterday
(but yesterday's gone my love, there's only now and it's time to face it)
Touch me in the morning...

Cat's in the Cradle...
and the silverspoon
little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home son, i don't know when
But we'll get together then, dad, you know we'll have a good time then..

and as i hung up the phone,i thought to myself..
that boy is just like me
my son is just like me....

And in the end ...
The love you take
Is equal to the love ...
You make

Those guys really had a way with words; simple, timeless, and universial.

We've been together for so very long
But now things are changing, oh I wonder what's wrong?
Seems you don't want me around
The passion is gone and the flame's died down

I guess I lost a little bit of self-esteem
That time that you made it with the whole hockey team
You used to think I was nice
Now you tell all your friends that I'm the Antichrist

Oh, why did you disconnect the brakes on my car?
That kind of thing is hard to ignore
Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore

I knew that we were having problems when
You put those piranhas in my bathtub again
You're still the light of my life
Oh darling, I'm beggin', won't you put down that knife?

You know I, even think it's kinda cute the way
You poison my coffee just a little each day
I still remember the way that you laughed
When you pushed me down the elevator shaft

Oh, if you don't mind me asking, what's this poisonous cobra
Doing in my underwear drawer?
Sometime I get to thinking you don't love me anymore

You slammed my face down on the barbecue grill
Now my scars are all healing, but my heart never will
You set my house on fire
You pulled out my chest hairs with an old pair of pliers

Oh, you think I'm ugly and you say I'm cheap
You shaved off my eyebrows while I was asleep
You drilled a hole in my head
Then you dumped me in a drainage ditch and left me for dead

Oh, you know this really isn't like you at all
You never acted this way before
Honey, something tells me you don't love me anymore, oh no no
Got a funny feeling you don't love me anymore...

Weird Al Yankovic -- "You Don't Love Me Anymore" :dogpile:

This one's by Air Supply

I can make the runner stumble,
I can make the final gun.
I can make every tackle
at the sound of the whistle;
I can make all the stadiums rock!

I can make the night forever,
or I can make it disappear with the dawn.
I can make you every promise that has ever been made,
and I can make all your demons begone!

But I don't know how to leave you;
do you really want to see me fall?
and I'm never gonna make it like you do;
makin' love....out of nothin' at all!

See if you can guess who wrote these lyrics.

I Think You Are The Kind
A song recorded by Ray Fuld and Doug Cook
In the album “The Doug And Ray Fuld and Cook Book”.

I’m just a lonesome vagabond,
an empty man of war-
seeking friendship with a total stranger.
As I wander on my way,
I’ll walk a thousand miles and more-
to take the time of someone who is willing-
and I think you are the kind who would be willing.

Yes, I know you’ve tried before,
and it only made you cry.
Still, I cannot promise
that you’ll never cry again.
I can’t pretend to be the one
that you’ve been waiting for-
let’s just say I’m a wealthy man,
with lots of time to spend.

If we meet while you’re out walking,
blindly through the dark-
take the time to step inside my shadow.
I can teach you more about
the people that we are-
if you’ll take the time to spare an answer,
and I think you are the kind to spare an answer.

Yes, I know you’ve tried before,
and it only made you cry.
Still, I cannot promise
that you’ll never cry again.
I can’t pretend to be the one
that you’ve been waiting for-
let’s just say I’m a wealthy man,
with lots of time to spend.

I’ll never say ‘I love you’
if you don’t know what it means-
I find it’s seldom rightly understood.
But if you can remember me,
as in some distant dream,
for what it’s worth, remember that I cared-
and I think you are the kind who will remember.
Yes, I think you are the kind who will remember.
Remember------me.

Yes, I know you’ve tried before,
and it only made you cry.
Still, I cannot promise
that you’ll never cry again.
I can’t pretend to be the one
that you’ve been waiting for-
let’s just say I’m a wealthy man,
with lots of time to spend.

Bryan Adams - Spirit Soundtrack:

Sound the bugle now - play it just for me
As the seasons change - remember how I used to be
Now I can't go on - I can't even start
I've got nothing left - just an empty heart

I'm a soldier - wounded so I must give up the fight
There's nothing more for me - lead me away...
Or leave me lying here

Sound the bugle now - tell them I don't care
There's not a road I know - that leads to anywhere
Without a light feat that I will - stumble in the dark
Lay right down - decide not to go on

Then from on hight - somewhere in the distance
There's a voice that calls - remember who your are
If you lose yourself - your courage soon will follow

So be strong tonight - remember who you are
Ya you're a soldier now - fighting in abattle
To be free once more -Ya that's worth fighting for

Seriously, though... Egads -- too many.

Coldplay, "The Scientist":

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are

I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And, Ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start

Running in circles
Coming up tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
Oh, It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard

Oh, take me back to the start

Josh Ritter, "Lawrence, KS"

This world must be frightening everybody's on the run
And I can't leave this world behind
And my house is a wooden one and its built on a wooden one
Seems I can't leave this world behind

Preacher says when the Master calls us
He's gonna give us wings to fly
But my wings are made of hay and corn husks
So I can't leave this world behind

Josh Ritter, "Kathleen":

All the other girls here are stars-you are the Northern Lights.
They try to shine in through your curtains-you're too close and too bright.
They try and they try but everything that they do
Is the ghost of a trace of a pale imitation of you.

Snippets from "Thin Blue Flame" (Josh Ritter, of course):

"I became a thin blue wire
That held the world above the fire
And so it was I saw behind
Heaven’s just a thin blue line
If God’s up there he’s in a cold dark room
The heavenly host are just the cold dark moons
He bent down and made the world in seven days
And ever since he’s been a’walking away
Mixing with nitrogen in lonely holes
Where neither seraphim or raindrops go
I see an old man wandering the halls alone
Only a full house gonna make a home"

"Borders soft with refugees
Streets a’swimming with amputees
It’s a Bible or a bullet they put over your heart
It’s getting harder and harder to tell them apart
Days are nights and the nights are long
Beating hearts blossom into walking bombs
And those still looking in the clear blue sky for a sign
Get missiles from so high they might as well be divine
Now the wolves are howling at our door
Singing bout vengeance like it’s the joy of the Lord
Bringing justice to the enemies not the other way round
They’re guilty when killed and they’re killed where they’re found
If what’s loosed on earth will be loosed up on high
It’s a Hell of a Heaven we must go to when we die
Where even Laurel begs Hardy for vengeance please
The fat man is crying on his hands and his knees"

Josh Ritter, "Girl in The War":

Peter said to Paul
"All those words that we wrote
Are just the rules of the game and the rules are the first to go"
But now talkin' to God is Laurel beggin' Hardy for a gun
I gotta girl in the war, man I wonder what it is we done

Paul said to Petey
"You gotta rock yourself a little harder;
Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire"
And I got a girl in the war, Paul the only thing I know to do
Is turn up the music and pray that she makes it through

Because the keys to the kingdom got locked inside the kingdom
And the angels fly around in there, but we can't see them
And I gotta girl in the war, Paul I know that they can hear me yell
If they can't find a way to help, they can go to Hell
If they can't find a way to help her, they can go to Hell

Paul to Petey "you gotta rock yourself a little harder;
Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire"
But I gotta girl in the war, Paul her eyes are like champagne
They sparkle, bubble over, in the morning all you got is rain
Sparkle, bubble over, in the morning all you got is rain
They sparkle, bubble over, in the morning all you got is rain

Bright Eyes (Connor Oberst), "Landlocked Blues":

I found a liquid cure from my landlocked blues
It would pass the way like a slow parade
It's leaving, but I don't know how soon

And the world's got me dizzy again
You think after twenty-two years I'd be used to the spin
And it only feels worse when I stay in one place
So I'm always pacing around or walking away

I keep drinking the ink from my pen
And I'm balancing history books up on my head
But it all boils down to one quotable phrase
"If you love something, give it away"

A good woman will pick you apart
A box full of suggestions for your possible heart
But you may be offended, and you may be afraid
But don't walk away, don't walk away

We made love on the living room floor
With the noise in the background from a televised war
And in that deafening pleasure, I thought I heard someone say
"If we walk away, they walk away"

Bright Eyes, "At The Bottom of Everything":

So there’s this woman, and she was, um, on an airplane, and she’s flying to meet her fiancé, sailing high above the, the largest ocean on planet earth, and she was seated next to this man who, you know, she had tried to start conversations, and, only – really the only thing she’d heard him say was just to order his, his Bloody Mary, and . . . and she’s sittin’ there, and she’s readin’ this really arduous magazine article about a third world country that she couldn’t even pronounce the, the name of, and she’s feeling very bored, and very . . . despondent. And then, uh . . . suddenly . . . there was this huge mechanical failure and one of the, the engines gave out, and they started just falling - thirty thousand feet - the, uh, pilot’s on the, on the microphone and he’s, he’s saying, um, ”I’m sorry, I’m sorry, oh my God, I’m . . . I’m sorry,” and apologizing and, and she looks at the man, and she, and she says, she says, she says, “Where are we going?" And, uh, and he looks at her . . . and he says, “We’re going to a party . . . it, it’s a birthday party . . . it’s your birthday party, happy birthday, darling. We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much.”

Well, Pete Townshend and Ray Davies were my favorite rock lyricists, so I'm throwing out the lyrics to a Kink's tune. However, when it comes to lyrics, it's usually a line here or there that really grabs me...

You worry 'bout the sun
What's the use of worrying 'bout the big ol' sun
You worry 'bout the rain
The rain keeps falling just the same
You worry when the one you need has found somebody new
But the world keeps going round
The world keeps going round
You just can't stop it
The world keeps going round
You worry 'bout yourself
What's the use of worrying now you're almost grown
You worry 'bout your home[?]
What's the use of worrying 'cause you'll die alone
Times will be hard, rain will fall
And you'll feel mighty low
But the world keeps going round
The world keeps going round
You just can't stop it
The world keeps going round

And some of my favorite lyrics from a standard (pretty strong stuff, in this context)...
Billy Strayhorn- Lush Life
(I'm omitting the lyrics from the first two stanzas)
Then you came along with your siren song
To tempt me to madness!
I thought for a while that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me.

Ah yes! I was wrong...
Again,
I was wrong.

Life is lonely again,
And only last year everything seemed so sure.
Now life is awful again,
A troughful of hearts could only be a bore.
A week in paris will ease the bite of it,
All I care is to smile in spite of it.

I’ll forget you, I will
While yet you are still burning inside my brain.
Romance is mush,
Stifling those who strive.
I’ll live a lush life in some small dive...
And there I’ll be, while I rot with the rest
of those whose lives are lonely, too..

I always liked this snippet from "All-Star" by Smashmouth.....

"She was looking at me dumb"
"With her finger and her thumb"
"In the shape of an "L" on her forehead"

If I should fall from grace with god
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I'm buried 'neath the sod
But the angels won't receive me

Let me go boys
Let me go boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

This land was always ours
Was the proud land of our fathers
It belongs to us and them
Not to any of the others

Let them go boys
Let them go boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

Bury me at sea
Where no murdered ghost can haunt me
If I rock upon the waves
No corpse can lie upon me

It's coming up three boys
Keeps coming up three boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

If I should fall from grace with god
Where no doctor can relieve me
If I'm buried 'neath the sod
And still the angels won't receive me

Let me go boys
Let me go boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry
