Michael Vick is Back

No, you're right. Other athletes have done worse. But since this post was about Michael Vick and it touches on me personally and professionally, I spoke out. I shall withdraw so as not to offend.

Please, by no means withdraw. Your opinion is just as important as mine's or anyone else's

I just get bent when someone says or infers that a person should not be allowed to practice their profession because they made a mistake. I believe in at least one second chance when someone screws up. He really screwed his life up and I won't argue that with anyone. But it's been two years and he served his sentence. He hasn't been able to work in the only career he knows for over two years and he's bankrupt. How much more does he need to suffer for others to say enough? Now if he gets reinstated back to the NFL and he does this again, I'll be the first one demanding his head on a plate! But please give the man a chance to recover and prove he's learned his lesson before condemning him permanently.

You're a vet and I think that's an awesome achievement. I've owned pets all my life and do love animals. But I don't think a man should suffer the rest of his life because he messed up anymore than I think a physician should suffer the rest of his/her career over a malpractice mistake. He/she should have the chance to redeem and move their career forward. If not, the rug has been pulled out from under them and all those years of education and hard work is flushed. Same with a professional athlete in the respect that they've worked all their lives to get to the top of their profession.

Give the man a chance. If he screws up, not only will I not argue about it, I'll be in the front of the line for his head on a plate.

The thing that bothers me most about crimes like these - exploitation of the weaker - is that it's just like a playground bully controlling others by fear. I think there's a strong correlation between crimes against animals and crimes against children. Neither has an advocate. They can't speak out for themselves. And they are the innocent victims. So I get a little more peeved and a little more vocal about people who enjoy such "sports" and who get around in life more by brute force. I'm not saying he's beyond redemption. I just don't want to see his face in the lime light. You may not want to hold athletes to higher levels of moral exactitude - and honestly, the courts don't so why should we? But still, he sets an example to a lot of younger folks who have serious cases of hero worship. That's what I hate to see. It doesn't mean he's not human and he's not allowed to make a mistake. But the publicity...it's so damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'll get off my soap box now.

His face will only be in the lime light if he achieves on the football field. As a football player, I believe there are things to admire about his skill set on the football field. I do not, however, believe people actually want to be like athletes; just to play like them and have their money.

Oh no, he is a role model whether he liked/likes it or not. Kids wear his jersey and his shoes (that they pay tons of money for) and ascribe to be like him. He had an obligation to them and his fans, and he f-d up big time! But on the other side of the spectrum, do you show kids that one mistake means complete abandon and no chance for redemption? That's showning kids a lesson too, and it's not a good one.

As far as the publicity is concerned, he'd do well if he remained humble and earn the respect he originally had. Time will tell if he's truly learned a lesson or if he's just another puffed-up, self-absorbed athlete.

He was not suspended for the last two years. He was in jail for a legal matter. His prison sentence itself is not an NFL suspension. He lied to the commish when he had his chance to come clean, he lied to the owner of the Falcons so right there is a sign he can't be trusted. Whether he pretends to be contrite now or if it is legit is open for interpretation.

I believe he deserves a second chance as well. A year is my gut. As I said the commish spoke to him and others and made an educated guess as to what was appropriate.
Prior sentences are irrelevant as the commish is not obligated to follow precedence on each incident. They are all supposed to be judged on individual merit.

As for all the dog lover bashing... shows once again some people can't respect other peoples value systems. It doesn't mesh with your own so it is not only wrong but worthy of ridicule. Kinda makes you hope they don't have the same opinion about other dependants but who's to say?

Who is bashing dog lovers in this thread, if I may ask?

PS: Nevermind, I see what you mean now that I look back at the thread.

HARMING ANYTHING WITH FEELINGS IS WRONG!!!!!!

Just to be an asshole but in relation to your post title, what do you think happens when a linebacker tackles a running back

"Hey, make sure you are set for when i slam my 250 lbs of muscle into your spleen at max speed"

LMAO made me picture vick laying there screaming AAAHHHHH my spleen

i glanced at the thread title and thought it said 'Michael Vick is black', then i wondered for a second as to how the thread could've reached 3 pages

Please forgive me if I am not doing cartwheels. What that asshole did is reprehensible. So much for cleaning up the image of the NFL. This would have gone a long way towards acheiving that hurdle. I will never forgive him for treating those dogs tyhe way he did.

If any team is going to sign him, it will probably be the Raiders. They might have Jeff Garcia as a backup, but Russell isn't so great as a starting QB.

Vick has the potential to be an excellent starting QB, but his first few years back will likely result in a lot of negative publicity. Only a team as far down the rankings as the Raiders would be willing to deal with that.

I suppose Detroit could also pick up Vick as a backup QB, just in case Stafford fails to deliver.

I figured the Lions were going with Stafford as a backup with Culpepper as the starter.

They are... so far. I'm not sure if they officially stated that Culpeper is the starter yet though.

Whatever the case, I suppose my wording was vague. I was basically referring more to the possibility of Stafford being a bad backup and then having Vick come in to replace him if that becomes the case. Every team has multiple backups.

Yes, what he did was reprehensible--and he went to jail for it. He paid his dues, lost his career, got put in bankruptcy protectionl, and now has to beg for his job back at a much lower pay (if he gets a job at all). And I'm sure the animal activists will be at every game shouting through the rooftops so no one will ever really forget it.

If you majorly screwed up your life and went to jail for it, wouldn't you want someone to forgive you and at least allow you a second chance? Now if he screws up after this, I'll have no pity on him or mercy for him. But I will at least take the wait and see approach. Besides, hating on the man isn't going to bring the dogs back is it??

I just dont get how people think if he comes back he will Boom, be a talented QB

He was not known for his arm, he was known for being a mobile QB.

IF he hasn't lost any speed while in prison, i think the only viable spot for him would be WR or a decoy\RB in wildcat formations

I could see it happening if the Ford's are willing to take the negative press for such an event. And when I say negative press, what I really mean is "is this move going to hurt us when it comes to making us money because we really do not care if we field a competitive football team as long as we get people out to see us". Lions games are more about kid friendly fun then football.

It would be progressive in Detroit though, and with their offensive line, his scrambling ability might be more of an asset than anything else.

And what is your opinion on Donte' Stallworth? Or Ray Lewis? Or Kevin Mack (retired)? These are people who committed crimes against other people. They did their time (except Lewis) and were re-entered back into society and back to their athletic professions.

Donte Stallworth did his time? Maybe legally speaking. Most people would agree that running another person down while driving drunk warrants at least one year of jail time.

Which is conspicuously less than he would get if he committed a dog holocaust.

It's a weird patchwork reality when an animal's life is valued more than that of a human.

The point of the matter is that Lewis didn't even get convicted and Stallworth did a lousy 30 days for killing a man. Vick gets two years plus his life ruined and people still want blood. Enough is enough--let the man get on with his life please.

This.

Is my point exactly.

I think the thing we're forgetting is that Micheal Vick sucked as a quarterback in the first place! What's the difference if him, Andre Ware or the dozens of flopped prospects come back? The Falcons dumped him, got Matt Ryan and look like their headed to a SuperBowl!!

He didn't always suck and now he has a great deal to prove to himself, the fans, and his haters. I wouldn't count him down just yet.

He had a few good games. The playoff win in Green Bay comes to mind but basically Vick was a runningback with a strong arm. He had VERY limited instincts for the quarterback position.
