Michael Vick is Back

He had a few good games. The playoff win in Green Bay comes to mind but basically Vick was a runningback with a strong arm. He had VERY limited instincts for the quarterback position.

I'm not going to turn this into a sports-themed thread because that's not the purpose here. But raw immature talent can be cultivated and he has to work harder because...well for obvious reasons.

No one has selected him yet so all of this could be just moot. I'll take the wait and see on this one.

He's a solid enough quarterback to start for at least half the teams in the NFL.

Half? I'd say a few like maybe the Raiders or something but out of the 32 teams in the NFL you can name 16 teams Vick would be starting for over the current quarterback I'd be shocked. :snow:

Which is conspicuously less than he would get if he committed a dog holocaust.

It's a weird patchwork reality when an animal's life is valued more than that of a human.

Funny, I thought you said earlier it was for illegal "gambling" - i.e. dog fighting.

Which is it?

And, btw, I don't consider any life more important over another. Nor do I consider any life insignificant. And since dogs and other animals are considered property legally in most states (I don't know of any that have changed the statutes to read owners are "guardians" or "caretakers" - maybe Wisconsin which was due to vote on it last I recall), you can't compare death of a person to destruction of property. They shouldn't carry similar sentences - which is ok, but I think it's overall unacceptable that the penalties for such cruel acts aren't a touch more severe to deter others.

Donte Stallworth did his time? Maybe legally speaking. Most people would agree that running another person down while driving drunk warrants at least one year of jail time.

Chris Henry assaulted underagers and was DUI'd several times

He was let back eventually

He went to the pound because he gambled. They got him on the dog killing. If Vick hadn't been running a gambling ring, he'd be burning more cash than you can earn in your entire life and continue killing as many dogs in whatever way he deemed fit to do.

His penalty is irrelevant. People are accepting of human beings being killed but when it comes to their doggie, they get outraged. And to me, that is an outrage.

Denver Broncos
Jacksonville Jaguars
Washington Redskins
Oakland Raiders
Kansas City Chiefs
St. Louis Rams
Minnesota Vikings
Tennessee Titans
Houston Texans
Detroit Lions
Seattle Seahawks
San Francisco 49ers
Carolina Panthers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Cleveland Browns
Buffalo Bills
Miami Dolphins
New York Jets

I actually got 17 there.

And those are all shoulds, because a great many of those teams, like most of the NFL, is run by copycat idiots.

And this is why dogs are man's best friend - many people prefer them over some of their own children (and yes, I've seen it). Vick's moral compass is his own. He has to live with his actions and the consequences. We each have our own conscience to follow. I'm glad mine is on a divergent path.

I could see it happening if the Ford's are willing to take the negative press for such an event. And when I say negative press, what I really mean is "is this move going to hurt us when it comes to making us money because we really do not care if we field a competitive football team as long as we get people out to see us". Lions games are more about kid friendly fun then football.

It would be progressive in Detroit though, and with their offensive line, his scrambling ability might be more of an asset than anything else.

True. Unlike a lot of other Detroit teams, the Lions really are more about marketability than actual talent.

It's a far cry from the Red Wings... lol...

They are what Mike Ilitch's Tigers were for so long before the man opened his pocket book to bring guys in to enhance the talent from their minor league system. It's just that nobody went to Tiger Stadium or Comerica Park, whereas Lions fans still go to Lions games for some dumbass reason.

The justice system makes about as much sense as the third matrix movie if you haven't seen the first. I think we should execute all the murderers and rapists, but I actually think Vick did his time. What I find apalling is how his scandal got exponentially more press than any of the several pro athletes to murder their spouses or maul a taunting fan over the years.

In all honesty, I believe they made the correct decision reinstating Vick into the NFL.

Yes, its true that what he did was horrific. But he served the time in prison that he was assigned to serve, he served out his probation and worked the construction job.

He paid his debt and he deserves to be reinstated.

That being said, I only really see low power ranking teams even contemplating ever signing him and taking on the drama that comes with him.

So more than likely I only see the:
Lions, Raiders, Bengals, Chiefs, 49ers and Seahawks even think about it

Yes, what he did was reprehensible--and he went to jail for it. He paid his dues, lost his career, got put in bankruptcy protectionl, and now has to beg for his job back at a much lower pay (if he gets a job at all). And I'm sure the animal activists will be at every game shouting through the rooftops so no one will ever really forget it.

If you majorly screwed up your life and went to jail for it, wouldn't you want someone to forgive you and at least allow you a second chance? Now if he screws up after this, I'll have no pity on him or mercy for him. But I will at least take the wait and see approach. Besides, hating on the man isn't going to bring the dogs back is it??

What is burning my butt about all this is that he did this act in a completely clear state of mind. Nobody put a gun to his head and told him to kill those dogs. He did this while he was of sound mind. I suppose he should be given a second chance, but I will find it very very hard to root for him in any way. Another problem I am having is that over the last few years, the image of the NFL has taken a serious beating. Roger Godell came in and made a commitment to restore the image of the league. Don't you think that it would have made a big statement if Godell said NFW. I think he would have been well within his right to do that, but he chose not to.

I suppose he should have another chance at making a living, but a) I am not happy about his reinstatement and b) Goodell just made himself look like a major hypocrite.

Of course he was in a completely clear mind. He grew up dirt poor in the south; amongst the poor in the south, dog fighting is seen as a prevalent form of sport. To them, it's cool. And to be quite honest, I really do not care if they are fighting dogs. I am a dog person too, by the way.

I am not a big supporter of the Commissioner because I believe he is a network lapdog, a faux tough guy. But he is not a hypocrite. He's reinstating the guy. The NFL's image problem? The NFL's image is that it prints money because fat white dudes who love to talk about toughness and smash mouthin' can stroke their cocks as they see trucks smash into each other. It's so manly, even though the way they talk about giving everything for the team probably is far too progressive than they would admit to. The NFL is a good old boys network which has archaic ideas about the game of football. Michael Vick's dog fighting and gambling ring charges were right on the heels of a very heavy time of media scrutiny against Vick because he was not a good quarterback based on arbitrary measurements as to what a QB is.

The reason hasn't been snagged up already is not because of media pressure should he sign with your team. No. It's the media hit you will take by taking a scrambling QB who isn't a statue, and because he's considered a dumb QB because he uses his natural athleticism.

Nobody is asking for you to root for him. But don't dilute yourself into thinking this event destroys credibility or what have you. That shit happened LONG before Vick played a down of football.

In Vick's last year of play he threw for 20 td's which is his highest single season total ever. I think he was really showing improvement as a throwing qb and was looking to pass a little more under pressure and run a little less.
My biggest concern with him on the field would be injury because he does scramble often and if he is hit there is a good chance it could be an awkward collision. That being said of course injury is a concern for any player at any time so it definitely can't be a deciding factor.

As a football fan I am intrigued to see where he will sign and what kind of style they try to mold him to.
