the whole story....here is a few blurbs

NEW YORK -- Baseball launched its probe Thursday into alleged steroids use by Barry Bonds and others, and right away the head of the investigation came under attack because of his close ties to the sport.
In the wake of a searing book about Bonds, commissioner Bud Selig appointed former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell -- and currently a director of the Boston Red Sox -- to lead the inquiry.

The probe will initially be limited to events since September 2002, when the sport first began testing for performance-enhancing drugs, but Mitchell has the authority to expand it. Selig said Mitchell's report will be made public but didn't set a timetable.

"The goal here is to determine facts, not engage in supposition, speculation, rumor or innuendo," Selig said.

Whatever the findings, it will be hard to penalize anyone for conduct before the steroids ban. Baseball began drug testing in 2003 and started testing with penalties the following year.

I think its a good thing from a PR viewpoint. Theyre going to make all the findings public and let out whom did what and let the public make their choice. Should they suspend current players? I dont see why not, after all there is no statute of limitations I dont think. Should they alter records, certain ones I think should be.

My main attitude toward all of this is "What took you so long?" Sports writers have been asking the questions that the league needs to ask for at least 10 years. It's an open secret among players - several have talked about it publicly. And with the knowledge that widespread in the locker rooms I simply can't believe that any of it is coming as a surprise to team managers or league officials. They're finally investigating simply because the publicity leaves them no choice.

I think that the league's findings will be determined less by the facts than by what they think they must say to avoid a massive drop in attendance and ad revenue. They'll say as little as they have to in order to avoid that. Personally I think players known to have doped should be suspended, no matter what their latest drug tests say, and that any records set while doping should be stricken. However the league won't take action that drastic unless the fans leave them no other choice, and I think the fans are too apathetic to push that hard.

How about this point, it is a joke. Because if a real investigation were being done it would be found out that MLB owners including Bud Selig knew all along. That would mean that Bud would have to resign. No choice. He knew about it. Now he wants to clean it up. What a joke. It's baseball version of Watergate. :xlime:

redmage i agree with you that they should take a stance and suspend players.Maybe there must be an * placed by some in the record books and guys like Bonds should be kicked out of the record books completely if he is found guilty.the problem with that is how are we 100% sure that some older guys from the 60`s & 70`s that are in the recordbooks weren`t taking roids?Steroids were around & available in the early 60`s but the testing has not become reliable until about 10yrs ago.and that is only for the known drugs.

How do we know??? Well because guys back in the 60's and 70's didn't get better with age. Besides do you realize that guys like pitchers were not allowed to weightlift? They thought it would take away from their strength during games. Now they workout before, during and after games and off-season. You did not see guys walk in from the previous season being 180 pounds then suddenly go to 210. It just did not happen like that. We can safely believe that these guys were not taking steriods during that time period.

My thoughts are its funny how these people who are outcrying at the roids were buyin tickets and rootin it on durin the mcgwire\sosa season when they even admitted to some substances(andro\creatine) and now all a sudden peoples' opinions have 180'd
