Sometimes movies are remade and occasionally even surpass the original(like Cape Fear, IMHO. I prefer Deniro's tatooed Bible-thumping psycho over the original's Robert Mitchum). But more often than not some Hollywood studio or hotshot Director decides to remake a fantastic film, and the new version is pure crap.
Here is a list of movies that I feel should never be remade into some high budget special effects snoozefest(and unfortunately some already were)
1) Jaws. No need to improve upon perfection. Seriously who today could even touch Robert Shaw's Capt. Quint? Maybe DeNiro, or a younger Anthony Hopkins, but even that might be a stretch
2) Blade Runner. Even thirty years later, it's a masterpiece(IMHO)
3) Robocop - Should never have been remade. The first one was just the right amount of violence and action, mixed w/a little bit of satire. Plus how could you top Clarence Boddicker as a gum chewing sociopath? I refuse to watch the remake(heard it sucked).
4) Walking Tall. OK, some of the TMF crew might be a little young to remember the original, but damn it was intense, and much more accurate(it was based on a true story). And nothing against the Rock, who starred in the remake, but it's easier to cheer for a chubby everyman like Joe Don Baker(the original Buford Pusser) than a chiseled Pretty Boy like Dwayne Johnson.
5) The Longest Yard. Again another film from the early 70'(I know I'm showing my age), and although I wouldn't call the original a great film, compared to that unforgivable piece of crap Adam Sandler remake, the 70's version looked like "Gone with the Wind"
6) The Pink Panther Movies. Peter Sellers created one of the funniest characters in Cinema history, only to have it destroyed by Steve Martin. Seriously I don't "get" Steve Martin. I never thought he was funny nor a particularly good actor, and having an overrated comedian trying to recapture the magic of Inspector Clouseau is like having the Three Stooges repaint the Sistine Chapel. Even Alan Arkin(who briefly starred as Clouseau in the 60's) was much better than Martin.
7) Fargo. Can't recreate that magic. Ohh Yahhh!
