Help!!

So hey, I'm looking for some new artists to explore. I listen to all kinds of music, so I'm not going to narrow it down to a specific category. But I'm sure those of you with smashing musical tastes wouldn't mind recommending some good artists for me to look through and listen to? Even better, if you recommended a particular song so I could check it out to see if I liked it.

I see music threads here a lot so I'm hoping for some awesome songs to be posted.

(And when I say I like everything I mean it. I have opera, classical, death metal, hard rock, alternative, punk, oldies, rap, classic rock, jazz, blues, hip hop, reggae, swing, etc.)

I've always liked alt-rock, dating back to 70s new wave when I was a teenager (yes , I'm THAT old). My favorite source of new music is at www.woxy.com . This is a long-time alternative radio station out of Cincinnati that my 19 yr-old son and I have listened to for about 6 years, and we both much of our new music from this source. They also have a "vintage" channel with a lot of 80s and 90s alternative music. That would be my recommendation. I wouldn't know where to start with individual songs!
Another possibility if you have digital cable...the music channels actually have some interesting stuff, from classical to country to metal and rap, if you're patient and really scan through a lot of channels.

My favorite current band is probably the White Stripes. I think they really have the spirit of 1970's rock and roll, simple and clean and fast.

A Perfect Circle is one of my favorite bands right now. Their song "Pet" is amazing.
All Time Low is another great band I've been listening to a lot lately. "Remembering Sunday" and "Come One, Come All" are stuck in my head all the time.

I too listen to pretty much everything. My very best friend once said "I can jam to almost anything, and the things i can't i can at least have a good time trying."

I discovered a rather unique music genre flipping through am stations in a traffic jam in houston once, Bhangra/Indian Dance music. Let's just say i've been sold ever since.

Well, I listened to that one online radio station a while back called Pandora. It was cool because if you input a song or artist you liked, it would bring songs about with similar qualities in hopes of expanding your musical tastes. Unfortunately it loops a lot of the same bands and I've heard many of them. 🙁

You can't go wrong with The Who

Amen. I love The Who. 🙂

Love, love, love the white stripes! They have great stuff, I'm a collector.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll look into them!

I'll always recommend Josh Ritter -- brilliant singer/songwriter with a sort of country-tinged neo-folk vibe, but a good deal of range within that feel.

Recommended songs:
Girl in The War
Temptation of Adam
To The Dogs or Whoever
Lawrence, KS (Can't leave this world behind)
Thin Blue Flame

Ditto, My friend.

The White Stripes are awesome! Jack White's playing is very close to 1970s Jimmy Page. In fact, Jack, Jimmy, and U2s The Edge made a guitar movie last year!

As far as great tunes by The White Stripes, PurrBast....

Check out:

"Little Bird" from De Stijl
"Blue Orchid" from "Get Behind Me Satan"

Al Green, The Decemberists, Elvis Costello, Fleet Foxes, The Fugees, Gogol Bordello, Benny Goodman, Ingrid Michaelson, John Coltrane, Joy Division, Lou Reed, MIA, The Mars Volta, Modest Mouse, Morrissey, Neil Young, Sam Cooke, Santogold, The Smiths, Stan Getz, The Strokes, Tom Waits, Velvet Underground, and Wilco... to start.

Heya! My musical taste is all over the map as well, so this is kind of a random sampling. All these songs are songs I really like from artists of a variety of genres. I hope you find something new to you that you like!

Bad Religion - Any song

Judas Priest - Painkiller , Breaking The Law , The Prophecy

Motorhead - Ace Of Spades

Sonata Arctica - Picturing The Past

Rise Against - Like The Angel

NOFX - Seperation Of Church And Skate

Offspring - All I Want , Kids Aren't All Right

badreligion had some great suggestions. (coincidentally I used to live in the same neighborhood as Greg Graffin in upstate New York, but he was hardly ever around so I never got an autograph).

If you like System of a Down, I'd recommend looking at what the members have done since separating. Serj Tankian is solo, Darl and the John formed Scars on Broadway, and bassist Shavo is in the band Achozen with some members of Wu-tang if I recall correctly. And if you haven't listened to System of a Down, what have you been doing with your life?

Also, Fair to Midland is an alternative folk metal band signed under Serj Tankian's label and they are also worth a shot. They aren't really hard core or anything, but they have a lot of variety amongst their songs.

VAST...

You guys rock, seriously. I've been searching these music recommendations and they are freakin awesome. I'm so glad I finally have some new stuff to listen to!

If you want some more, then there's some bands I feel obligated to say... EBM/Industrial/Aggrotech stuff. Fairly underground at the moment, and much of it is something of an acquired taste.

Bands, then songs:

Combichrist - Sent to Destroy, This Shit Will Fuck You Up (and the live version afterwards - it's funny), Get Your Body Beat, Shut Up and Swallow, Are You Connected, Blut Royale

:wumpscut: - War

Psyclon Nine - So Be It, Parasitic

Aesthetic Perfection - Architect, Living the Wasted Life, A Quiet Anthem

Angelspit - Vena Cava, 100%, Wreak Havoc

Grendel - Void Malign, Harsh Generation, Remnants

Random bands you may or may not have listened to before. Hope you find some winners. I'd say give the entire album a chance, not just select songs.

Band - Album. I tried to pick what I thought would be a good intro to the band listed.

Radiohead - All albums, but give In Rainbows or OK Computer a try first

Oceansize - Everyone Into Position

Bjork - Homogenic

Girl Talk - Night Ripper

Deftones - White Pony

Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets

Damian Marley - Welcome To Jamrock

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium

Mr. Bungle - California
