Musicians

I already posted in this thread that I play the guitar and the piano.

I don't actually play the piano all that well. I don't even have one or get to use one ever, but I have picked up the harmonica and I've gotten quite a bit better on the guitar.

Go me.

Started on trumpet in jr high (1968) and went to French Horn and Baritone Horn while still on trumpet. French Horn for Symphony, Bari for Concert Band and trumpet for Jazz Band. Stopped for 20 yrs while working. Found a trumpet while hunting on private ground.

Played Soprano horn (trumpet), Flugelhorn and finally French Horn.

Arranging and conducting are my strong points.

As a joke, I took up the Recorder (vertical flute) and Irish Tin Whistle. Learning bagpipes (practice set).

I do honor guard duty as a bugler.

Bagpipes! Nothing gets me misty-eyed quicker. I swear, it's like they touch some far-flung racial nerve with me or something.

What's the difference between a "practice" set(of bagpipes) and the real deal?

I've been a musician most of my life. I love threads like this and getting to know other folks who play.

My first instrument and true love is bass guitar. Started around 11 or 12 and was picking apart Rush tunes. I think starting with guys like Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, etc...made me a better player. I remember the early days when a group of guys would all be guitarists and they'd draw straws or something to see who "had to" play bass. I wanted to make bass something other than just running the root notes of chord progressions. I love using bass as a lead instrument.

These days, I'm primarily a keyboardist, though. I started that at around 16 to be able to add some different sounds with the guys I was jamming with. Had an old Roland Juno analog synth. I've always had a fascination with what I call "soundscaping" and became quite good at manufacturing subtle sound with synthesizers and such. I enjoy the freedom of expression keyboards give you. Of late, I've been working more intently on traditional piano stylings, as I've always been more of a synth/organ player who could get by on piano.

I actually did both at once in the 80's. I was in a Rush tribute band and had to sing, play bass, keyboards and pedals. "Twas fun, but challenging.

I also play guitar, but mostly as a second guitarist in a band or as a songwriting tool. Never really honed my lead style, but I can get by on blues leads and such. I actually love rhythm guitar...I think FAR too many people learn how to play barre chords, soak them in distortion and call themselves guitarists. there's a LOT more to chordal playing than just that...you have to know your theory and your way around a fretboard.

Rounding out the repertiore, I also jam a pretty decent harmonica, and have dabbled with the dulcimer and extraneous percussion.

Samples of my original music:

Tammi and Druantia Short Soundtracks: digital tracks + my guitar playing (some pentatonic licks). They sound better at higher bit rate. I got other guitar finger picking samples buried at TMF. Born to love arts and music.

The Great Highlands pipes have three drones, the practice pipes only have two. Also, Great Highlands have adornments such as silver, expensive woods and the older ones (over 100 yrs old) have actual ivory inlays.

Price for a Great Highlands start around $10K+, practice pipes $150.00.

And the one big thing I like about them is since I keep getting asked if I'm a retired jockey, I can easily get my arms around them

I've played the guitar over the course of 15 years or so. I used to be really serious about it and practice with great regularity, having dreams of making it in the music industry. Nowadays, it's just an ever-so-occasional hobby.

... And why not? Due to the recent previous posts, this is clearly a subject that displays continued interest.

Nice to hear that!

I started playing piano at age 11. Started playing guitar at age 17. In the 1980s, I was playing keyboards for three bands, while also working full time. I had zero free time, but those were some of the best years of my life.

Presently, I enjoy composing original songs and recording them using a combination of MIDI sequencing layered with live keyboards, vocals, and guitars.

And you don't just say it because you have shown great samples here and at TMF. You are able to make those digital songs analog sounding. Crafty!

I also enjoy sequencing quite a bit, and know how tricky a process it is. I agree that Drew has a really cool way of recreating an analog-style sound. You've done some pretty neat-o stuff yourself!

Of course, I remember you riff those live "G3" style bass lines at Robace Radio Night. [Ah, musicians of TMF gather at threads like this... argh! 😉]

I too was bowled over by Dave2112's incredible on-the-spot bass piece on RobAce radio. But I'm convinced that's just a small sample of his talent. I would love to hear more.

I've also heard some outstanding pieces from Anno Xanti, who won Rob's first TMF Idol contest with an awesome song parody video. What amazes me about Dave2112 and Anno Xanti is that both are not only excellent musicians, but extremely talented artists as well.

Nostradamas? I can only say that I'm humbled and privileged to have colaborated with him on some tunes. Not only is he extremely talented on multiple instruments (bass, guitar, drums), but he's very savvy on the studio production side of things.

There is a lot of creative talent in the community.

Drew70, how can I hear some of your music? Is it posted somewhere?? (is it experimental or progressive at all??)

I played the trombone for 8 years, baritone for maybe 5. now i play the bass and some quitar.
