To me i think lifes about choices, struggle, and to test or faith on temptation and to never forget redemtion that their gonna be down falls and uplifts, bad side, good side dark side ,brightside for example crime, poverty, murder, molestation, rapes, hate lies, sadnessand depression, but their always be love , hope ,faith, commitment, honesty, special times, presious moments. some might have more some might have less some might not get to experince that. theirs lots of conflict in religions muslum, jew and chirstians they should relize that were all Gods children were so blind in our own minds we wouldn,t even know God if we were right in front him their gonna some things that are gonna make hard to smile in the begining and future its hard to visualize paradise but when close ur eyes you can see it then when you open your eyes you relize you have a fucked up life and you wanna break down and cry God come help please why but you cant be weak minded its called faith always keep ur head up remeber everybody got a stroy to tell??

That's a fine theory, and if it works for you then keep it, but life is not lost on those of us who have no faith either.

Life is about pro-creation. Every species on this Earth is here to create offspring and carry on their existence. We are just another specie on this planet and our main purpose is to carry on existence of our race.

We're not bacteria, there is more to us than just breeding otherwise evolution would have been a waste of time. But you are right in the sense that one of our primary motivations is to multiply, but that's more to do with biology than personality.

The meaning of life is all about subjective bullshit!

I don't believe there is any actual meaning. I mean, what is the meaning of life for a dog, cat, bull, horse, bee, ect...? We are species just like them and the reason we speculate on the meaning of life is because there is no actual true meaning. We simply exist. Christians believe we exist to endure hardships to overcome and grow in faith with God. Other religions believe in other things and obviously nobody truly knows if or which relgion is the "real deal." I hope there is something that lies beyond or life on earth but I don't believe in Jesus or God or any other religion.

We have personalities and all species evolve over time. We have no idea what kinds of species may have existed before dinosaurs or even when dinosaurs were around. All creatures change and who knows, thousands or millions of years from now humans may seize to exist while new species evolve. We sort of are just like bacteria in the sense that we are here to multiply. We are just like other animals in many ways based on our natural instincts to seek shelter, food, warmth, protection, ect. We have our own capabilities while other species have their own capabilities. We may have more intellectual ability, but all we are is just another type of specie on this planet when you break it all down.

Agreed. When you break it all down. As for religion, if the religious want it, let them have it. Christopher Hitchens said "We are pattern seeking mammals." Religion is a result of evolution, our brains have evolved to the point where we have to convince ourselves that we know what is unknown, because the unknown scares us. Throw in a few thousand years of indoctrinating children, then just add (Holy) water.

Maybe this should be in P & R.

If you believe your life has no more meaning than any lower form of animal or insect than so be it...

i think there is a little more to it....The fact that we can even discuss it gives a little more meaning than what a dog, cat, or bird can do....:spermey:

Our ability to discuss it is simply a result of our higher brain functions, a product of our evolution. Give other mammals a few million years of evolution and who knows, maybe they'll be discussing it as well 😀 I wouldn't go as far as to say our lives have no more meaning than an insect, after all our relationships with other humans are far more complex than anything an insect is capable of, and it is from these relationships I believe the 'meaning' of life can be derived. But in the grand scheme of things we're just hairless mammals who have learnt to build stuff, nothing more remarkable than that.

Our universe is at least 156 billion light years wide, which is filled with somewhere between 100 and 200 billion galaxies. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains between 200 billion and 400 billion stars and is 100,000 light years end to end. And the sun is one star among those hundreds of billions in our galaxy alone.

Our nearest star is just a little over 4 light years away. The fastest speed humanity has achieved for any vehicle is Helios II, a solar probe which clocks in at 43.63 miles per second. That means with our current level of chemical rocket technology it would generously take 15,000 years to get to the nearest star.

That's not even considering that the universe itself is mostly composed of dark matter and dark energy - weakly interacting particles and energies that we're just beginning to "see" for the first time. And it's possible that there may be an infinity of other universes, most of which you'd come across wouldn't be capable of supporting life.

It's insanely expansive, cold, dark and in the best-case scenario, mostly lifeless universe of which we inhabit a dot circling a dot circling a dot which mingles with a cluster of other dots.

By itself, without an intrinsic meaning to life, humanity is unimportant. Life is either an accident or a sporradic inevitability. Same with sentience. The Earth is a meaningless blip. The universe itself is a cosmic happenstance. The fact that someone doesn't like Obama or tries to save the California condor or climbs Everest or writes a bestselling novel or drinks too much scotch or doesn't get along with his mom means nothing. It'd only be relevant because you forget that it isn't. You could destroy the Milky Way galaxy and the universe will get along just fine, thank you very much. It doesn't matter if you die because everything will eventually die, even the universe in the end and no one and no thing will be there to mourn it.

So I think that maybe life has some meaning and maybe there's a God that actually gives a damn about us, because the alternative is horrifying.

That is remarkable enough for me....the rest of the mammals will never evolve as much I dare say...no matter how much time you give them..:mhorns:

capnmad thanx for the comment on the beard its funny how a feeble mind person like your self get so distracted by my awesome beard but back onto the subject well people may have think that were just mammals with very little meaning like insects, dogs cats etc but how do we know that the way they communicate they not asking the same question to eachother none of us speak dog none of us speak cats or spider so how can you call their life meaning less if we dont understand them but what we do know is life has meaning if it so meaningless then why live on why strive to survive and make it fun or tolerable why have morols im not saying be a christian or join a regilon but there has to be a higher power than us think about it the theroy of the creation of life was by a bunch of elements gathering togther for no apperent reason couinsedince? or how the galxy is tuned enough to have life gravity is tuned in a in comprehasnsible degree to have us here and the dials of the planet and coordinates are so well set but the fact that the matter is to make life great liveable for you and not to take it for granted and to make better for the future

Um, he's not feeble minded at all. He was being jokingly friendly in that your responses are difficult to read when they run together with the way you've punctuated them.

Not to be negative about what you said, but realistically, what higher meaning do we have? When we die we are gone and forgotten unless you did something historically significant and put in a book. But for the most part, you seize to exist, have knowledge of existence because your brain is no longer working, and for the rest of eternity you are nothing more. You can have fame, a billion friends, a billion dollars, all the respect in the world, but once your dead it's all gone for ya. To me that really makes you think about how regardless of how fulfilling life is when you are alive it all ends the same way whether your Bill Gates or a bum on a street.

You sound like someone who has never heard this debate before, here's part 1 of a debate between Christopher Hitchens and Frank Turek on this subject:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IM-6FnArd3M?fs=1&hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IM-6FnArd3M?fs=1&hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Please follow on to Part 2, 3 and so on . . .

Once again, if your religion works for you, enjoy it! But if you're asking me if I think the universe can be explained without a higher power, the answer is yes.

LOL, I just re-read his post and noticed it is just one long run-one sentence. Jesus Christ, it is amazing how nowadays you can go to college without being able to properly formulate thoughts with punctuation and paragraph breaks where needed.

capnmad thanx for the comment on the beard its funny how a feeble mind person like your self get so distracted by my awesome beard but back onto the subject

Brother, no offense meant. But I was feelin' silly, and my comment was admittedly off topic. Hadn't seen you post before, though, so welcome to the forum! 🙂

Yes , but the OP's second post was much clearer by practically doing away w/punctuation altogether!

Couinsedince? :idunno:

I'm not going to be hard on Shane for a topic like this. We're talking about a subject that begs to be told in a stream of consciousness and oddly flavored. Let's try to tweak shane's original post just a little:

To me, I think, life's about choices, struggle, and to test our faith on temptation,
And to never forget redemption
That they're gonna be down-falls and up-lifts, bad side, good side, dark side, bright side
For example crime, poverty, murder, molestation, rape, hate, lies, sadness and depression
But there'll always be love, hope, faith, commitment, honesty, special times, precious moments
Some might have more, some might have less, some might not get to experience that
There's lots of conflict in religions muslum, jew and chirstian
They should realize that we're all God's children
We're so blind in our own minds we wouldn't even know God if we were right in front of Him
There're gonna be some things that are gonna make it hard to smile in the beginning and the future
It's hard to visualize paradise
But when you close your eyes you can see it
Then when you open your eyes you realize you have a fucked up life
And you wanna break down and cry
God come help please; why?
But you cant be weak minded
It's called faith
Always keep your head up and remember
Everybody got a story to tell?

People may have think that were just mammals with very little meaning
Like dogs, cats, insects
But how do we know that the way they communicate they're not asking the same question to each other?
None of us speak dog, none of us speak cat, or spider
So how can you call their life meaningless if we dont understand them?
But what we do know is life has meaning
If it's so meaningless then why live on?
Why strive to survive and make it fun or tolerable?
Why have morals?
I'm not saying be a christian or join a regilon
But there has to be a higher power than us
Think about it
The theory of the creation of life
A bunch of elements gathering togther for no apperent reason
Coincidence?
Or how the galaxy is tuned enough to have life
Gravity is tuned in to an incomprehensible degree to have us here
And the dials and coordinates of the planet are so well set
But the fact of the matter is to make life great
Liveable for you
And not to take it for granted
And to make it better for the future
