The Shootout is traditionally the Saturday night, before "front row" qualifying, on the Sunday before the 500!! Then they run the "Duals" on the Thursday before..to set the rest of the field. I haven't noticed if that has changed, this year.
And now with the Super Bowl in our rear view mirrors...how about a little more NASCAR banter??!!
How about the new "Chase" format...which was formally announced last week??
--still the last 10 races...
--expanding from 12 to 16 drivers to participate...
--4 drivers to be "eliminated" after each 3rd race, during the Chase...
--points reset after each "elimination race"...
--and leaving a "Final 4", to race for the cup, in the final race!!!
Plus...(and I think the most important element)...WINNING A RACE..virtually assures you a spot in the Chase!!! (provided there aren't more than 16 winners, over the first 26 races) The only exception to getting in without a win..is if the actual "points leader" doesn't have a win..going in to the Chase.
I know the emphasis has been on WINNING...since they went to the "Chase format". However...now maybe we'll see some truly, old fashioned "boys have at it" racing again!!! But only if Brian France and Mike Helton let them...without "probation" and/or suspensions!!! (unless it's REALLY OBVIOUS that it's for retaliation, and not just "battling for the win")
Anyway...that's my two cents on this matter!!!
