NEO sports ads...Mainstream /M

Long time lurker, but first time post. Sorry it's a bit agitated.

WTF is wrong with these people? Torture (as in real torture) for entertainment, and making a joke of it? These commercials are disturbing. Why not just cut off their ears and burn out their eyes.

Yeah, they're bad

I have to agree with Shockeye on this one. Just saw all three ads and they're all terrible. I didn't find any of them funny. They are simply drawn out torture pieces. If ads like this ever ran on American television, I would hope to God viewers would squash whatever company advertizes it and the PR firm to dust.

Think about it...really...do you remember what's being advertized? Or do you really just remember the torture?

Mind you, I enjoy tickling torture. Love watching it in movies, television and done on videos between consenting adults. No problem there.

But the point in the ads is the emphasis on torture, a sure sign of desperation and condescension of the viewing audience. Horrendous advertizing.

The point of the ads - from a culture different from most of us here - is the agony men go through when missing their favorite sports. I wish that wonderful nurse had perhaps gotten a few does of her own medicine!

I can see these ads being her breakout role to bigger stardom, like when Salma Hayek started out by doing a Mexican soap opera or Maggie Q was modelling.

Wow.

I certainly didn't expect that reaction.

Its not real...its a commercial.

I do not condone real torture...I will watch fake torture, like tickling torture.

I thought it was pretty obvious that it was over reaction by actors...sorry if it offended anyone.

Your statement IS the point

"Its not real...its a commercial"

If the point is just to express how much suffering a man can go through if he doesn't watch a sports channel, then why not go all the way? Why not show men being tortured in a concentration camp for "giggles" by a "Dr. Mengele"? I mean, we're already (in this commercial) being shown how medical personnel can be utilized in the performing of torture--something well documented in the dictatorships of Nazi Germany, Pinochet's Chile and the military junta of Argentina in the 1970's. Look it up, read about it, then watch the commercials again and see if you're not sickened.

In the world of advertising, there are simply places you do not go, especially if the only purpose is to sell you something. Advertisers want to sell you a concept as well as a product and connect that product to that concept. That's why companies like GM will show repeated images of close family life. Loving families don't have anything to do with cars, but the PR people want you to feel the connection.

Why would the PR firm and the sports channel want the connection between torture and their product? It's unbelieveably stupid, regardless of what culture it is.

Hey Toyou,

I liked the first one. Thanks for bringing it to the forum. I thought the other two were funny. As I sports fan I can totally relate!!! 🙂

I've read everyone's responses to this post. I'm kind of surprised myself.

I didn't see the commercials as torture as say the way people are being tortured in Iraq. I saw it as old timey mad-scientist type experiments. If you notice, the scientist did have a clip board and a monitor and was writting down whatever his findings. And if it's not for science purposes then why the nurse?

In my honest opinion it's no different than the stuff I've seen in MJT mags.

Which actually opens up a question that I'm quite sure that I'll regret asking later, but what the hey.

I'm just curious as to how everone would feel if the victims in the commercials were women?

Say if they were commercials for Sex in the City with the same premise but the question at the end would be "Feel the same pain when you miss S.i.t.C.?".

I'm not trying to start a major conflict here between /M fans and /F fans. However this board often times seems very one sided and quite hypocritical when it comes to men being tickled.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I dig what kucheeku and shockeye are saying. Where does one draw the line?

Check out this link from the Washington post. It's a great article on torture on American television.

But as I said before I have seen a lot worse than this. I thought the commercials were fine.

Thanks again Toyou.

Peace all,

Ticklehunter.

I can definitely understand some people's sensitivity to seeing torture, and I agree there is no room for ACTUAL torture in the world...escpecially of innocent people.

But, its not real. What if it was a Bug Bunny cartoon? What if it was a single panel drawing? (Although I know Gary Larson caught crap anytime he drew a dungeon scene.) I truly feel the OVER DRAMATIZATION of the reactions makes it so less believeable as to seperate it from real life torture.

Just my 2 cents, but if anyone else feels uncomfortable with seeing a man tortured by tickling, itching powder in an arm cast, or a fly trapped and buzzing in his ears, then please do not watch the above videos.

Don't worry about these folks toyou, that clip was funny. I also noticed that Ku likes to bitch at people who complain about */M tickling, well pall that works both ways. If you don't want people bashng what you like, then don't run down what others like. It was a vid, a vid, a farce, a spoof, LIGHTEN UP!

The fly one I thought extracted the most humor out of the genre (ie I laughed out loud!).

The tickling one....if it was ok for the 3 Stooges 50 years ago....enough said.

Thanks for the links 🙂.

It's interesting how some are not reading my posts carefully enough.

I thoroughly understand, and even enjoy, some scenes of "torture" done in movies and tv shows in the context of the plot.

But no one seems to be concentrating on whether the concept of torture should be sold to you via PR firms. That's pretty disturbing, given what we've had in this country over the last few years regarding our approach to torture (look at Abu Grahib, Alberto Gonzales, and who knows what with the Blackwater mercinaries).

Of course the commercials have to have farcical approaches to torture. If they were serious-minded, would you stand for it? You must admit, unfortunately, some would say yes. So it begs the question: Should PR firms be treading this ground for your dollars? For some it seems to be okay, but my conscience tells me no. I don't apologize for it.
