THIS is the 3rd largest movie ever?! Oh, btw, guess which pile of crap it eclipsed (excuse the pun), none other than that sappy take on tragedy: Titanic

Yep, this movie has beat out such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, The Dark Knight, and other obviously inferior movies.

I am depressed.

I feel the need to repost this after this tragedy.

I don't see how this is even remotely shocking.

The people into this are REALLY into this, and the likelihood is there will be people going to see it over and over and over again. It will make somewhere in the neighborhood of 300-400 million dollars and make 200 in DVD sales.

I mean, I don't like it. I think the books are hackney, the characters are all flat, Bella is Mary Sue escapism of which Meyer uses to live out a fantasy, the espousing of Mormon belief and this romanticism of subservience to bland males devoid of character or true grit. I don't question its place in literature (because it doesn't have one, no matter how many books Meyer sells) and with the way critics talk about the film, it is not like Twilight is going to surpass Slumdog Millionaire, No Country For Old Men, The Dark Knight or There Will Be Blood in critical circles. At the same time, I do not begrudge them their entertainment. I think the cultural value in Twilight is equal to that of Nightmare On Elm Street, if we are discussing this on those grounds. I don't like it, but eh. I don't like a lot of things.
 
Never underestimate the power of the obsessive American tween girl demographic to completely control and temporarily weaken and destroy western popular culture, over sometimes the most awful of topics or fads. Not on account of quality or critical acclaim, because it's usually complete and utter drivel, but because it involves a pretty boy.
 
Crazy how much a single movie can make- just think.. there's two more set to release....

A) What was so bad about Titanic? I loved it.

B) I'm surprised you're surprised or depressed; boys and girls from 8 to 18 have been waiting for this goofy flick, (a lot of whom are too young to see better films like DK so their dollars didn't support it) plus guilty-pleasure seeking grownups. Popularity and quality have *nothing* to do with each other for those groups, they just wanna have a good time and they'll pay the $10 to see such a flick with their friends. More than once, with different groups of friends or their moms, hence the $$.

On topic, it just goes to show, girls can be geeks, too! My wife is a huge Twilight fan, so I had to go to the midnight showing on a work night. I was one of maybe 10 dudes in a SEA of estrogen! I felt like I was at the anti-Star Wars. :scared:

LOL! As Stephen Colbert would say, "The market has spoken!" This must be one of the greatest films of all time, because the box office says so! "Citizen Kane" and "The Godfather" can blow it out their ass! 😀
 
I've never seen these movies, or any parts of them, until I was checking out a review on the AV Club the other day, which I read only because I know they'd be mocking the whole concept.

I had heard the term "sparkly vampire" thrown around, and I assumed it meant that they had like a shimmering, subtle aura or something. But I hadn't seen it actually play out until I saw a clip.

Oh my fucking god! These are SPARKLY vampires. Holy shit, it's the sparkliest thing I've ever seen. No wonder people have been terrified of vampires for centuries.

They make an 11-year-old girls notebook look like the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Like I was saying, popular and successful don't mean 'good'. Tween-agers have a *LOT* of buying power these days, trust me I have a 12 yr old who THANK THE GODS doesn't care about all this sparkle bullshit but her friends do; and lord knows I was at the !#*^%$ Hanna Montana 3D movie last year :eeew: The Pet Rock was absurd but created a millionaire; PG-13 romance with half nekkid lame-but-admittedly-kinda-cute vampires and werewolves couldn't miss.

Meanwhile those of us over 25 with some sense will wait impatiently for June and the next season of True Blood 😈

Teens are obsessed with Edward.

Grown women are obsessed with Edward and Jacob.

Teen girls want to be Bella.

20somethings dig the Vampire scene as a whole/obsess over Edward/Jacob.

Some men secretly want to be as ripped as Jacob/Be Edward.

It's really not that shocking.
 
I really miss good vampire flicks. True Blood kicks ass now can we please take something like that and make it a decent movie. And for all those people obsessed with Edward all I have to say is the dude has weird nipples. I was made to go to the movie and you see him with out a shirt. Really? I didn't think he was cute before and now he's even worse. Weird nipples I tell you look for it.

Sparkly Vampires and a Deluded Woman who is torn between her love for a 1 billion year old dead guy and a Wolf. The Wolf also ends up imprinting with the Sparkly Vampire baby later on. Basically it's soft-porn with a few heavy doses of pedophilia here and there. Oh, I think there's a few scenes with a Motorcycle and Edward walking away from a Volvo.
 
I think this is the first sign of the apocalypse.
 
Just as long as the Academy Awards recognizes the two leads in "New Moon" as "Best actor" and "Best actress" next year.
