Why would a 'friend' not be able to see blog entries? I've heard different reasons/edits the user gets stating something along the lines of not authorized... etc.

Until a user makes a certain number of posts blog access is restricted. This is designed to stop spambots from spamming blogs. This happened heavily a few years back until the restriction was made. If the people make a reasonable number of posts they will have access.
