have we lost our souls as a society?

Choking back tears and holding aloft a coat made from the skins of 42 Alsatian puppies, Heather Mills McCartney, wife of ex-Beatle Paul, called for a European ban on cat and dog fur imports Tuesday.

"I became aware of this (trade) only four months ago," she told a news conference in Brussels at the European Parliament.

"It was a big shock to myself and my family considering my husband and his late wife Linda were involved in animal rights ... and none of them knew about the dog and cat fur exports from China and the fact that Europe (is) importing it."

Animal rights activists estimate that 2 million cats and dogs are killed in Asia each year for their fur which is imported into Europe under false labels, saying it either fake fur or exotic Asian species, to make soft toys, blankets, coats and fur trims on hoods.

"It's barbaric that this is still going on," said Mills. "It's more disgusting that the fashion industry where a lot of people are actually aware of it buy this because they know it's cheaper than using the fox, mink and sable that is labeled."

Five European Union states -- Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece and Italy -- have banned imports but the absence of a 25-nation bloc total ban means the trade cannot be halted.

British Conservative member of the European Parliament Struan Stevenson has campaigned for the past five years for an EU-wide ban.

Stevenson said the new EU Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou should act immediately to draft legislation outlawing the trade.

"The vast majority of the citizens of Europe want a ban, the majority of the MEPs want a ban," said Stevenson. "Mr. Kyprianou, it is over to you."

The Commission said it was investigating the situation.

"Commissioner Kyprianou is very concerned about this practice and has asked his services to look into the legal avenues which are open to the Commission to act," said European Commission consumer protection spokesman Philip Tod.

gotta ask this.....

Why is it so much more upsetting when it's a cat or dog than any other animal? Do other animals have fewer rights or deserve less protection?

I don't mean that to be confrontational or anything. It's just one of those things I wonder about. Frankly, I have much less problem with those who use the meat for food using the pelts for clothing than I do poachers who just kill and skin animals and leave the rest to rot. We are stewards of this planet we live on. It's time we start taking proper care of it and those creatures entrusted to our care. Use them where necessity dictates, sure. But, what many do goes far beyond necessity and abuses our position on this planet.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I'm sure not all will agree and that's cool.

Ann~I think it's because we Americans tend to think of cats and dogs as our "pets" and not so much with some of the other animals...🙂

XOXO

DO NOT VIEW THIS IF YOU ARE EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO GRAPHIC ANIMAL CRUELTY!!!!

One of the ladies at MySpace.com posted a very disturbing video along with her profile. I watched this in horror and I must admit that I will do whatever is necessary to end cruelty to animals.

Click on the profile, scroll down and watch the screen:

Hell, if it truly exists, is reserved for the people seen in this video.

Amen...well said.

It's hard for our cats and dogs as pets mentality to comprehend that in other cultures, these are a source of food. So many iunwanted animals are killed here on a daily basis, it truly is a waste of the gift of life. At least those who become a meal didn't die for nothing. But I hardly think that those dogs or cats who become food are the ones whose skins are being used. This is just wrong. :sowrong:

God's animals (ALL ANIMALS IN THIS WORLD) should be protected and kept out of harms way as best as possible for people like that in the article and in the short video clip. God created all things in this world (again only my opinion) and he most surely created lovely animals in this world to protect us and love us and just to be wonderul awesome creatures and produce in this world. NOT to hit and burn and be harmed. 🙁 :sowrong: 🙁

"Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission - to be of service to them whenever they require it. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."
-Saint Francis of Assisi

Thanks for the warning featherfingers, I didn't look at it. I'm one of those sensitive types.
Hell it wasn't more than an hour ago that I dislodged a black widow spider from my front door into a styrofoam cup and dumped it over the wall in the back yard.

(onto a grassy slope, not into someone else's yard 😀 ).

No need to kill without a reason.

That black widow wasn't trying to get a piece of me, it was just hanging out trying to make a living.

I couldn't view the entire thing myself, TKpervert. I figured that sometimes seeing is believing. If someone who doesn't care about the welfare of animals sees that, maybe they'll have a change of heart.

Thank you for the warning Frankie~it's not your fault I'm a moron but I cried thru the entire thing :dropatear
The look in the eyes of that racoon is worth a thousand words. Back in the day, before heaters, etc, I could undertand why people needed animal coats (or at least thought they did.) This kind of abuse is just sick and wrong. Someone needs to do the same to them (hell, make a lampshade out of them, I wouldn't mind a bit.)

XOXO

Thank you for the warning Frank. I couldn't view even 30 seconds. I am extremely sensitive to crulety to animals but curiousity got the best of me. I guess the old saying is true "curiousity kills the cat". (I apologize for the remark).

You know what's interesting, though? This isn't an opinion, just a meditation. There is one form of animal which everyday, mainstream people in America and elsewhere make a sport of torturing, and that's the fish. I mean, consider fly-fishing. The whole point of the sport isn't even to eat the fish: most fly-fishing that I read about is catch-and-release. The point is merely to get a steel hook jabbed into the fish's mouth (though it occasionally goes in the fish's eye instead), wear the fish down to a state of total exhaustion as the fish tries to get free, and then pull the fish clear across a lake by the steel hook in the mouth. Fishing stories actually have things in common with tickling stories, except that in this instance the 'lee is hardly a consenting party. Again, not an opinion, just an observation.

That said, in practical terms, I will give my support to the rescue of dogs and cats, and leave the fish to their fate, because dogs and cats have such humanlike qualities that it feels cannibalistic to eat or wear them, in my view--and I do enjoy my trout and calimari. Did you hear the news story about the dog that dialed 911 for his mistress? He knocked the receiver off the hook, pushed the autodial button, and barked and barked till an ambulance came. The 911 operator said the dog really sounded like he was trying to tell her something.

Steph, I know you... you've got a heart of gold and wouldn't kill a fly. I just wonder what kind of cold hearted person could view that video and walk away without any sadness at all. I hope that kind of person isn't among us.

Giantfan, I had a real hard time deciding whether to post that video or not. I finally thought that if it discourages just one person from hurting animals, then it was worth it. I knew the warning was needed, as well. I'm sorry that Steph ended up crying, but that just goes to show you what a loving person she is.

Cruelty to animals is bad, mmmkay? But I gotta ask, how many of you are vegan?

I'm not vegan but it's worth investigating how your meat, egg and dairy supplies are treated while alive and how they are eventually butchered. All I can say is I'm glad I'm not a hen.

I'm sure not a vegan, and I'll swat a fly and step on a roach with the best of them. But I do find it interesting that the mainstream of America will rail against cockfighting while on their way to the lake with their fishing poles.

A word about slaughter...

It is regulated and now many fast food chains are even only endorsing those plants where the animals are treated humanely (i.e. no cattle prods or other stimuli are used to force animals into the shutes). Death should be as quick and painless as possible. I'm certainly not a vegan, but I have been through some USDA training to know that quality and safety are two concerns everyone should have. But you can never be too informed.

I don't fish, but I have friends who do. The "sport" isn't as vicious sounding as you make it sound. And many do save their catches for eating. Funny, I eat meat, but I don't eat fish. Don't care for the taste. No philosophical or moral objection.
