Figured this was a good time to post this, after reading about yet another case of fatal road rage yesterday...

BASIC RULES FOR DRIVING IN NEW YORK

1. Turn signals will give away your next move. A
real New York driver never uses them.

2. Under no circumstance should you leave a safe
distance between you and the car in front of you, or
the space will be filled in by somebody else,
putting you in an even more dangerous situation.

3. The faster you drive through a red light, the
smaller the chance you have of getting hit.

4. Never, ever come to a complete stop at a stop
sign. No one expects it and it will result in you
being rear-ended.

5. Never get in the way of an older car that needs
extensive bodywork. New York is a no-fault insurance
state and the other guy doesn't have anything to
lose.

6. Braking is to be done as hard and late as
possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving a
nice, relaxing foot massage as the brake pedal
pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it's a
chance to stretch your legs.

7. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the
right. It's a good way to scare people entering the
highway.

8. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as
a suggestion and are apparently not enforceable in
New York during rush hour.

9. Just because you're in the left lane and have no
room to speed up or move over doesn't mean that a
New York driver flashing his high beams behind you
doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.

10. Always slow down and rubberneck when you see an
accident or even someone changing a tire.

11. Learn to swerve abruptly. New York is the home
of the high-speed slalom driving thanks to the State
Highway Department, which puts potholes in key
locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them on
their toes.

12. It is traditional in New York to honk your horn
at cars that don't move the instant the light turns
green.

13. Remember that the goal of every New York driver
is to get there first by whatever means necessary.

14. In the New York area, 'flipping someone the
bird' is considered a polite New York salute. This
gesture should always be returned.

LOL! You forgot one: Whoever uses his breaks first has lost the game... 🙄

Seriously: I've driven cars in many countries, but there are a few places where I strictly avoid self-driving. Cairo, Bangkok, and NY!

I've driven in most major cities here in the U.S. in my truck New York City has got to be the worst as far as traffic It doesn't matter what time of day it is traffic is always slow

Ouch but true

You know that NY drivers are actually good drivers, it's the assholes from Jersey that show up and mess the roads up for the rest of us!

:blaugh: :blaugh:

That's rich, Q!!

Must remember these the next time I'm in NY.

Cheers.😀

NYC drivers are ridicously agressive, good thing I have several family members who are experienced on just that. In NYC, the only thing worse than the driving is the parking.

I always thought NYC drivers were aggressive but at least they have a clue of what they are doing. Try going to Boston. Not only are the drivers stupid, but the city is confusing because it's not a grid. As far as getting around, washington DC has to be the worst. If you don't know the city you are effed.

As far as crazy drivers, I went to Bogota, Colombia two times and they are the craziest. Thry will cut in front of you w/o giving it a second thought.

"You know that NY drivers are actually good drivers, it's the assholes from Jersey that show up and mess the roads up for the rest of us!"

That's only true if you reverse the venues in that sentence.

No offense intended Knox!

I think the Jersey drivers come to NY and the NY drivers go to Jersey and just make both venues a waking nightmare!

Sounds like every maor metropolitan area that I've ever driven in. And THEN you add two feet of SNOW a day to the equation... 🙄 😱

Or shaking of the ground.🙄 😉

only 2 feet??? nah that's nothin'....6 to 8 fee then ya got a problem 😉 😀

New Orleans, the land of interstate highways that must coincide with the curve of the MS River and/or any randomly chosen street in the French Quarter. 🙄

Tourist sttractions are on the left, which means all applicable exits are on the right. As a result of people wanting to "see" anything, it is a MUST that you travel in the left lane. One must then make all right exit turns from thatleft lane located four lanes away. If you fail to do this, or choose to do this without cutting off at least two cars, your car is impounded and you're sent to Arkansas.

how about an upstate rule?

when someone is inching their way forward, past the 50 ft snowbank, to see if anyone is coming, be sure to blast your horn and swerve in the most exaggerated way possible (that NY salute would apply here too).

also, sometimes I would swear that my car goes into stealth/invisible mode w/out me even knowing it!

You should try to sell your car to the Pentagon! 😛

you know... I’d make a fortune!

except for the fact that it only seems to be invisible to SUV’s and minivans with “Soccer Mom” bumper stickers...

( 😛 back)

makes me glad i don't drive.

What would you all do if I cruised by with my feet out the window?? would feel good this time of year.

Not at all invisible. It's just that they are in shock when they see YOUR bumper sticker. 😛

what...?

doesn’t every suburban mother of two have a gay rights bumper sticker on her station wagon?
