On...

www.mlb.com.

It states.

"Arod closes in on Mays, with homers number 657, and 658".

Arod is "technically" only two homers from tying Willie Mays, and three homers from passing him, with one slight problem.

Mr Mays, got all of his 660 homers honestly..

Arod, as we know, from his suspension.. used performance enhancers.. to achieve his totals for homers.

I guess my question is.. if Arod's homers weren't achieved honestly, and if such homers would get him into the Hall of Fame has they been achieved honestly, and, since he didnt achieve said totals honestly, and will likely be kept out of the Hall of Fame, does any of this really matter?

Thoughts?

We'd best ask Pete Rose..... Seriously, it shouldn't matter a bit - make it clear that doing the enhancers ain't gonna get you the fame you wanted, and maybe even make it affect your fortune that you sought so hard for. Most of us would be happy making only a bit of what these jokers make, just "for playing ball."

Understood.

The thing is, rd, while I respect what you're saying.. to me there is one difference.

If you read the thread/poll I posted about whether or not Rose should be re instated, my opinion is that he should be, that he served his time, and that as a player, he got all of his 4256 hits honestly.

One cant say the same for the guys with tremendous home run totals, who did steroids.

Thus, I feel that because Rose got his stats as a player honestly, and the steroids home run guys didnt, Rose should be in the Hall of Fame, and they should be left out.

Actually I have nothing against putting Pete in - what he did was miniscule compared to the steroid users.

Still on the fence about Pete!!! While what he accomplished, on the field, deserves to be recognized by the Hall..what he did as a Manager used to be THEE #1 "NO-NO" in Baseball!! (until PED's..came about)

As far as "home run records" go..simple..do like the NCAA (speaking of "crooks" LOL!!)..and "take away" a certain amount of "PED enhanced" numbers!!! Just like the NCAA takes away coaches' wins in both football and basketball!!! A-Fraud..Bonds..McGwire..Sosa..etc., etc...will never get in the Hall..anyway!!!

I think he should still get in based solely on his merits as a player. He did a shitty thing as a manager but I feel like he's suffered enough for it

Arod tied Mays with his 660th homer tonight, and to me it doesnt mean a hill of beans.

Arod didnt get his stats honestly, and wont be in the Hall of Fame.

Even if he should ever get to 763 homers, who cares? It doesnt matter.

Yeah...I get it somewhat about the steroids thing. However, you take a body building steroid guy and put him at the plate and he will never hit it out of the infield or might not even hit the ball at all. There still takes one heck of a lot of skill in becoming a home run hitter....to see the ball correctly, to be able to go deep in the count, bat speed and so on and so on. Yeah, I agree they taint the sport that way but those guys still are great ball players.

peace out,
daddy

If you look at past hall votes, all of the steroid era sluggers: Palmeiro, Bonds, Sosa and McGuire's votes have been measly over the past few years. I think only 5% or writers had McGwire on their lists last year. That's light years away from the 75% needed to get in. I think the writers are smart enough to realize A-Fraud is one of this bunch. I know Joe Posnanski, an SI writer who used to write for the KC Star said he wouldn't vote in anyone associated with the steroid era.

PED users will never get into the HoF, so their stats don't "really" matter, but they still will go down in the record books. Bonds still has and will forever have, the most home runs ever, illegally attained or not that can't be taken away from him. It's a bummer it has to be him, but still is. So A-Rods numbers won't matter for the HoF, but in terms of people in the future looking at stats they'll matter.

My guess is that there are already some PED users in the HoF. It is that they just didn't get caught. Most professional athletes and even many amateur athletes do use some type of PED.

Betting on baseball as manager and player is every bit as bad as steroids, screw Pete Rose
