Hello,

The latest iteration of the pyramid scheme I have seen recently deals with Coffee. I'd like to know if anyone here has successfully participated in this or any such pyramid scheme enough to make a decent living.

Thanks,
K

I avoid pyramid like companies like the plague. There are a lot of variations on that theme. I knew several people that fell for that sort of stuff and ended up loosing a lot of money.

This came up to bite me in the ass twice.

As I posted on here in the past, I had tax issues in the 90s. Thus.. I could not be on anyone's payroll for a period of time, and wanted to try and make enough money at home to make a living, and iron out my problems.

I started in a company where we were told to recruit sales associates, to sell Gold Bars. I mailed out flyers to people on a mailiing list.. We had conference calls, etc, and had what was called a "downline". After a while, I got a letter from the post office that such "pyramid schemes" were illegal, unless you sold a legitmate product or service. I thought that the Gold Bars were the legitimate product, but apparently not, according to the post office. At that point, I stopped mailing the flyers, and dropped out of the company I was participating in.

The company I was involved with from 2001 to 2004, Market America, was, and still is, a legal company approved by the Federal Trade Commission. By this time, my tax issues were ironed out, so I was able to be on a payroll.

In spite of Market America being a legal company, and people I was working with making a lot of money with it, I was unable to recruit sales associates, because many people I approached, had been burned in "Pyramid" "MLM" Schemes. Market America had two aspects, Direct Sales, and "Network Marketing". Network Marketing, had a very bad name.. because of the people having been burned in MLM's. In spite of my working at the company for almost three years, I was forced to drop out when I couldnt make a living. Even my old sales contacts in the MLM type companies werent interested, both because they had been burned in Pyramid Schemes, and because Market America, was, and is, a very complex company that not many people understand.

Due to my past experiences, I would now avoid a company like Market America, Amway, etc. Let me be clear. Market America is a solid company, with good products. I met a lot of fine people there, who were very helpful to me. It was not their fault that the company didnt work for me. It was just that Network Marketing had such a bad name, that getting sales associates to sign contracts, was next to impossible.

Mitch

I should also make one other point about Market America.

At the time I joined Market America in 2001, I was talking to my father. His two business partners at the time were lawyers. They knew I had been burned in MLM type companies in the past, and both the lawyers and my father checked out Market America in regard to its legality, being a solid company etc. After their investigation, they told me to proceed forth with the company. At the time I was in the MLMs, from 1996 to 1999, I was not in touch with my father during those years, so I had no CPA or lawyers at my avail to check things out. Looking back on it, with the MLMs, I should have been more careful. What happened to me with Market America, was not my fault, and was just bad luck.

Thanks for the responses please keep them coming. I have some friends who do this sort of thing and I was always skeptical of them. I remember I was approached by some energy drink pyramid scheme as well as a prepaid legal scheme. Both times I looked at the numbers and decided it wasn't for me. Maybe this stuff works for sales people, I am not a sales guy in the general sense and I hate recruiting my friends to anything I'm even half way leery about.

Thanks,
K

Most of the coffee I've seen comes in a cylindrical container called a "cup". Typically it has a starbucks symbol on it and costs 4x as much as it should.

There is one about selling coffee which is starting to get pretty crazy here in Texas, not sure if its national or not. The origins seem benign from what little I've read about it. My friend told me a lot about it and I just kept thinking pyramid scheme which is why I feel I couldn't listen to it objectively. That is why I wanted to know if any of you know of any successes in pyramid schemes in general.

Thanks,
K

I remember writing the compensation structure on a napkin as the guy spoke and think that at best it was a short term scheme with eventual diminishing returns. As more people join in the returns tend to fizzle out I'm guessing. Seems good in theory, then again most schemes seem good in theory.

Thanks,
K

Well the good news is the freaking SEC will NEVER figure it out!! How they can audit a legitimate firm and write them up for small infractions is a joke. Bernie had more red flags than a Mao Se Tung pep rally! ***rimshot*** GEE, EVERYBODY knows all the "real" pyramid schemes have to come from Egypt. If your old geometry teacher from high school recruits you, even better. It is sad to think the Nigerian, etc official needs to get funds out of the country, hey I just found some money in the parking lot and will split it with you if, hey grandma, I've been arrested and need you to wire bail money etc schemes in all their various spins are still apparently reeling em in. *****plays "The Entertainer" *****

Pyramid schemes...yuck. I think soul less people are the only ones that do well with those things. They always try to recruit me when they realize that I'm a part of several large organizations. They want me to sell a dream to my friends/family/peers/coworkers that has a .0000001% of coming true. I make money off of them and they lose. What a great friend i'd be! No, I avoid those things like the plague. I feel bad for friends that try and sell me on it because I look at them in a different light after that. Like they lost my respect. One friend, a chiropractor tried to recruit me last...He later sent me an email apologizing for trying to recruit and admitted I was right about the scheme and how it manipulates friends out of money. "a fool and his money are soon parted" is the saying?
