Ok you take two karate experts both are of equal skill although there both above black belt skill level. You trained them both so you know there legitimately trained. Then you have them spar to see what happens however, remember the following things are true. One of them is completely blind, and the other is completely deaf, which one in your opinion would have the edge? Also, what do you think would happen? Also, are there any videos of this being done? This is a serious question by the way

I’m no martial arts expert, but given all else to be equal I would tend to think the eyes have the advantage. But it would be an interesting experiment with non-handicapped students to blindfold one and earplug the other for one match, and then switch them around for the second match.

I would imagine the blind one would have the advantage. Once contact is made (and probably even without that), even without the use of sight you have an idea of who you're up against, where their body is, weight, size, force, etc. And you might work harder and faster to neutralize the threat if you know you only have so many chances before being taken down.

The Deaf guy would have a massive advantage. Just sneak around back behind the fucker and rabbit punch them. Fights over.

I think the blind guy would have the advantage. Blindness heightens the other senses to compensate, and the deaf guy will have no idea how much noise he's making, allowing the blind guy to capitalize on the deaf guy's assumed lack of subtlety.

Being blind doesn't automatically make someone Matt Murdock.

If the deaf guy executes any kind of maneuver where his feet leave the ground, whether a punch or a kick, how's the blind guy supposed to know where it's coming from? Smell?

Yeah, and what if the deaf guy has a gun?

😀 I was thinking more along the lines of THIS glorious product of 1989:

<object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mdcTxslEWrE?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mdcTxslEWrE?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

If these are both supposedly top of the line black belt martial artists, I'd think a blind guy would be like this guy, or Matt Murdock.

It's just hard for me to visualize a deaf guy ever really being able to master stealth in order to take advantage of the blind man's lack of sight. He's supposedly a black belt, so I imagine he must've, but still. I can't see it happening. I think the blind guy's got it.

Hmmm this is a interesting thread. That is a good question. To be honest I am not sure-both would prove difficult handicaps-one being blind and another karate instructor deaf. That would indeed be a tough one. Just curious what got you thinking of making this thread? I am not sure who would win but I am sure it would be very interesting event to see.

As someone who has spent over a decade in martial arts, taking at minimum of two styles at time and for no less than 3 years per style, I can tell you the deaf guy would have the advantage EXCEPT in Judo. If this is Karate, then being able to see trumps being able to hear hands down. I know it's cool to think that you can sense your opponent or somehow hearing them will make you able to dodge their attacks or something... and in some cases, if they are moving slowly enough you might even be able to (for instance, drunk guy at a bar or something. Slow, exaggerated movement, unsteady, etc)- but Karate is FAST. I mean very VERY fast. In Judo you start already holding each other, and you generally do not let go. This means eyesight really isn't important at all. It's helpful for being able to see their footwork, but you really don't have to see to do what you need to do. Feeling their weight, the way it shifts, etc. In fact, hearing isn't important either. Helen Keller herself could have been a pro judo champion!

But with Karate? The deaf guy hands down. I know it's not very imaginative to say that, but reality just isn't as cool as fiction sometimes. 🙁

Of all the posts, this is my favorite. I loled. =D

Awww, maaannnn. You mean to tell me my favorite scenes from 80s martial arts movies, such as this final fight from Bloodsport aren't realistic??? Dammit! 😀

I currently study martial arts but I am not an instructor. That being said, I think the deaf guy would have the advantage. Thee is something to be said about being able to see a kick or punch and being able to react appropriately.
