Rap of today vs rap of yesteryear

Remember the entire "Roxanne" series? People used to hash it out without a pile of bodies!

I'm all for street cred; Ice-T for example. But when it become a vitimization crutch - or worse, manufactured violence as a seling tool - just change your name to Vanilla Ice and sell out ALL the way.

Know, man - thanks for those! Yes, I'll have to get further into HED PE.

And Prime, you picked some excellent older stuff!

Have you guys noticed that the rap parodies of today are more inspired, creative, and original than the actual rappers(and in some cases even have better rapper names). For example:

"I really get around, I'm the slut of the sea,
When I say I have crabs, I mean it literally" :roflmao:

And of course, stuff such as Natalie Portman's rap, Lazy Sunday, and I'm on a Boat from SNL.

Oh, and I almost forgot my favorite:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Bqxnm6t3QMw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Bqxnm6t3QMw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Anyone who says all of today's rap sucks isn't looking hard enough. The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common just to name a few

My favorite all-time rap act is probably A Tribe Called Quest.

Yeah, most rap of today is incoherent and really REALLY fucking repetitive.

I'm more of a rock-rap person. I haven't really heard any older stuff but a newer group I like is Hollywood Undead.

SoulRebel, by and large, rap is not as good as it was back in the 80's and 90's. Common is really talented no doubt, but for the most part, rap of today doesn't even compare. Watch the clips I provided as well as others and you will see a contrasting style.

Guys like Kanye West make me laugh. Why? He claims he is the greatest rapper of all time. Is he drunk? Is he crazy? Not even close. He isn't even in the same ballpark as 2pac and Ice Cube. And why people have this fascination with Lil' Wayne is beyond me.

Rock-Rap is okay. Hollywood Undead has a song I really like called "Undead". But, like others have pointed out, rap of yesteryear had much for fun styles.

Just to show that I'm into some West Coast hip hop , as well :

Here it is, the breakdown of Rap music:

Rap 1989: Bustin a move and being funky fresh, chillin with the fellas, speaking up for the people

Rap 1999: Big pimpin, makin money, and fly whips (thats cars for you uncool people!)

Rap 2009: Poppin caps, f^ckin' b!tches, and gettin' rich off cocaine (And yes, the last one is actually a line in the chorus of a currently 'hot' rap song. Screwy, ain't it?!)

I don't even want to try to predict what rap is gonna be like in 2019, assuming that these socalled 'artists' haven't run the genre down into complete nonexistence.

And you people wonder why I'm a Jazz man!

Yeah, you don't get anything like this these days...
