Regarding the PM Dating Site Spam

Hello folks,

It seems the spammers are being more creative and have created a new type of Spam that is custom written for sites like ours, and is spammed to PM boxes. In this case many of you got a note from a ticklish young thing that wanted you to verify yourself on a 3rd party site before she would talk to you.

This of course was a way to get you to subscribe to a re-occuring billing site.

Ignore this junk. We have killed off the cluster of accounts doing this, if you see a new one posted after the date of this message, drop us a line and we'll go stomp anew!

I was kinda wondering why out of something like 80,000 members (last time I checked) she would pick me. My user name starts with L, and I don't post much. So it wouldn't exactly be "the first person she see's".

Thanks for taking care of her. She certainly made up a believable username. If I weren't always so sceptical about these things, I would have believed it.

We killed the link via the censorship feature the forum has built in. That way even if the spam gets through members are not able to go to a site that might have bad things that might compromise their computers on them. That is why you see it as a lot of "****"

The full URL was still present in the quick reply area until you killed the bogus user, in case you want to look into masking that as well.

Yeah, great feature. I've used it on a forum myself once, although I had to watch out not to abuse the feature for teh lulz.
