On thursday morning Borders will ask the courts for permission to enter final liquidation of the remaining 399 stores in the chain.

From Reuters:

Borders Group Inc, the second-largest U.S. bookstore chain, said it has canceled an upcoming bankruptcy auction and will close its doors for good.

The company said in a statement Monday it was unable to find a buyer willing to keep it in operation and will sell itself to a group of liquidators led by Hilco Merchant Resources.

Borders' roughly 400 remaining stores will close, and nearly 11,000 jobs will be lost, according to the company.

"We are saddened by this development," Borders President Mike Edwards said in the statement. "We were all working hard toward a different outcome, but the headwinds we have been facing for quite some time ... have brought us to where we are now."

I love Amazon.

But when I don't wanna wait, I'd go to Borders.

Now I have to figure out how to get to Barnes & Nobles.
 
I remember finding my first Borders in Indianapolis. It was like nirvana. Such a waste...Sad. B&N is never conveniently located period. I'm lucky to have a Half Price Books close to where I work (and near one of the Borders stores closed earlier).
 
I don't read them papery books enough. The internet has so much damn reading material on it that I'm hard-pressed to find time to just kick back and read Lord of the Rings again. It's a shame that they're closing, though. Book stores have really had it rough, lately.

Well hell, anything that isn't located on the internet has had it rough lately.
 
While I bemoan the increasingly rare mom and pop bookstore, I'm sad to learn of Borders demise. Amazon is great, but I love to browse the dusty shelves of an old bookstore with its musty smell, hold a book in my hands before making a purchase, then take it home with me. R.I.P. Borders.

I'm glad to see this posted. I worked there for 5 years with some of the greatest people on Earth. Sorry to see it go... 🙁 :redheart:
 
This is very sad news, Myriads, and is an unfortunate sign of our times.

Borders bought out the Waldenbooks at our mall in Lancaster some years ago. I knew the manager there well, and used to buy from them often. Then, I confess, that when I found Amazon, I started buying from them due to lower costs. Not long ago, the Borders in the Lancaster mall was bought out by a store called Books A Million. Neither the selection or service is as good as Borders.

Goodbye, Borders, you were a great company.

Bye Borders. I never liked you anyways. Well done Barnes & Noble, you are now King! Until amazon sends you packing at least.

If I'm coming off as uncaring..... yah. Neither store carries anything I'm interested in reading and both tend to be way overpriced (I've seen things on B&N and Amazon 40% cheaper than borders so if anything, I'm glad at least Borders is gone).
 
Is there Mom and Pop anything left? Not that it really matters. Borders never really competed with B & N or Amazon anyway.

Of course, it's just no one bothers looking for them though since that new wal-mart opened across the street.
 
There are a lot of independents still about We have 2 very strong Indi Book stores locally. (The Open Door and The Book House)

True, that. Most folks won't bother, since they typically don't stock the latest "hot" titles in my experience. And you know, that's okay too. We like what we like. It just takes more effort to find these gems than it did when I was younger. Anything that sparks an intrest in reading is fine with me. One never knows what it might lead to.
 
A sad sign of the continuing sour economy. I loved Borders, not only for books, but bought a lot of music there as well. It was a cornerstone of our new mall (where I used to live/ Douglasville, GA) when it opened in late 1999; walking through Arbor Place now it's like a shell of itself with so many stores closed and boarded up.

As someone else said....goodbye old friend....am really going to miss you 🙁
 
Showing my age, but... back in the day, bookstores were small and quaint, not like today's 4 story frapavanillacino living-room furniture showrooms... fond memories of idling through (*gasp!) large vinyl record albums and their unique cover art. It was a more visceral way to connect with your purchase... to me, while convenient, today's online purchases are cold and impulsive... and an MP3 is sadly bereft a great art form - the full album cover and sleeve art/lyrics used to be half the fun of the music.

What will we do if the grid goes down? Read the owners manual to an iPad by moonlight?

Some of my fondest memories are of just wandering in old book stores (and our old small county library), just looking at book spines. I would wander and read titles until soemthing would catch my eye. I could spend a day doing just that. At least we are not burning them yet. I read Fahrenheit 451 at a very impressional age. If you have not read this Ray Bradbury classic I recommend it. The movie is okay, but read the book!

The nearest book store to me is about sixty miles away, and it is a used book store.

Times are a changing! And not necessessarily for the better.
 
Borders had an awesome music section, lot of obscure and import cds. I knew the end coming when they eliminated the jazz, blues, country, and world sections and lumped all the cds together. Plus they stopped ordering anything new or different. In the last few months, Borders sucked for music!
