In another thread I just happened to mention that Benjamin Orr, bass player and singer with The Cars, had passed away. This came as news to a few people, even though he died a few years back. I thought this thread could be used to list great musical talent of all genres who, though they may have left this world, they also left us with wonderful musical memories to remember them by.

With that, I'd like to announce the passing of John Whitehead, one half of the duo McFadden & Whitehead, performers of the 1979 disco hit, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". He was shot to death on May 11, 2004 in Philadelphia.*

*Side note- McFadden & Whitehead were the background singers heard on Arthur Conley's 1967 hit, "Sweet Soul Music".

Doris Troy, who had a 1963 hit with the song "Just One Look", died on February 16, 2004, from emphysema. Her voice was also heard on Pink Floyd's classic "Dark Side Of The Moon" LP.

Brian Connolly- lead singer for Sweet ('Ballroom Blitz', 'Love Is Like Oxygen')

Cub Koda- lead singer for Brownsville Station ('Smokin' In The Boy's Room)

Johnny Bristol- sang 'Hang On In There Baby'

Rock & Roll Heaven...

Hello Featherfingers,

I am surprised that you forgot Rick James, who passed away in July. I also miss Barry White, the Maestro, who passed away last year.

Mark

He didn't hon. There are threads devoted to Rick James already 😛
XOXO

George Harrison, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Jimi Hendrix

Hey, MAJ, no oversight intended. He died so recently and was well publicized, both he and Mr. White, (whom I count among my all time favorites), I figured everyone knew they passed away. My intention was to list the entertainers that most people didn't know had died. We all know that John Lennon was senselessly murdered in 1980 and that George Harrison passed away in 2001. But I bet not many knew that Randy VanWarmer, who sang the 1979 hit, "Just When I Needed You Most", passed away earlier this year.

Keith Moon
Stevie Ray
Frank Zappa
but the hardest was John Bonham

I was supposed to go to see them on tour, which was inevitably cancelled. :cry1:

Elvis Presley- The King of Rock and Roll
Dusty Springfield- Son of a Preacher Man
Peggy Lee_ Fever
Eva Cassidy

Just think... if Selena had never been killed, maybe there wouldn't be a J-Lo today.

not that i listened to their music all that much, but John Entwistle of the Who died....June 27th 2002 from a heart attack brought on by cocaine use.

got that from imdb.com

...yet Keith Richards lives.

Now never heard Randy Van Warmer passed on, thats sad even though I know nothing but his one hit. Heres some others that we lost and to me was a great loss:

Falco
Bebu Silvetti (not rock music but he was a genius)
Robert Palmer
Warren Zevon

thats just to name a few

Timi Yuro, who sang the 1961 hit "Hurt", died March 30, 2004. That lady had one of the biggest voices ever, and that song is one of the saddest... even more so now that she's gone.

After playing a couple of Tom Petty cds tonight, I forgot that former Heartbreakers bassist Howie Epstein passed away in the last year. This was such a shame as Howie was a fine bass player and an outstanding back-up singer. And it was the f'ckin' drugs that killed him!

One of the coolest things I ever heard Joe Strummer sing on is a version of "Redemption Song" with Johnny Cash on Cash's "Unearthed" box set.
I want to hear some of his "Mescaleroes" material.

Isn't it interesting how a lot of people who lent their voices to "The Simpson's" passed away. Johnny Cash, Barry White, George Harrison, Linda McCartney, Rodney Dangerfield, Phil Hartman, Isabel Sanford (Weezie), etc. I just thought that was interesting.

Not that this man is a rock star but he and his group use to do Rock Festivals in England in the 70's

I'm talking about Graham Chapman of Monty Python Fame

The day he died in 1989 was (for me) similar to the day Elvis fans learned of his death.

Here's some info for the uninitiated. Click on 'A Bit On The End' or 'Graham Remembered'. :

I'm quite a Monty Python fan, too. I wear a pair of Python undershorts...for my python.
