oh the joys of living in Coastal CT right now! my downstairs is totally destroyed!! Winds and rain is frightening right now. Local little river looks like the rapids of Colorado! Someone stop doing a rain dance!!!!! NOW!!!

Seriously...I am debating if I should spend the money going to Nest right now. The money it will take to fix my house....urghhh

Yes, come to Nest

Your home insurance will cover most of the cost of repairs and redecoration. Maybe the place was due for new furniture and a bit of freshening up, so this could be a blessing in slightly damp disguise.

Happy memories always outlast houses and suchlike anyway, so let us cheer you up.

I'M HEARING ABOUT YOUR BAD WEATHER.

I just looked at The Weather Channel and there is a big Low Pressure area over all of Southern New England.:disgust:

Hang in there, Judy! We've got our pump going, keeping it out of our cellar up here. It's finally letting up after just over 4" of rain in our area. But, I'm still keeping a close eye on the neighbor's tree, hoping it doesn't come visit us with the high winds.

AFA insurance covering things... That isn't necessarily so. It depends on the coverage one has. Flood insurance is difficult to get and normal homeowners insurance generally doesn't cover water from outside the house...only water damage from broken pipes and the like. One of the joys of the insurance industry here in the states. FEMA is in the area, looking at damage from the last nor'easter. So, they may get a jump on this one's reviews and speed up the aid process.

That rain just missed us. We're expecting 80's by Friday. 😎

I agree with Libertine though. Don't you have coverage?

Things are different here in the USA.

^You must purchase Flood Insurance to be added to your Homeowners Policy.^

Sorry to hear that you have water damage, JPie. 🙁 🙁
Hope you will be able to make it to NEST after all. 😀

Yes. And this can ONLY be purchased if you live in an officially designated flood plane. You can flood during every storm. But, if you aren't in a designated flood plane, they won't sell it to you. (I know this from experience. We've tried unsuccessfully to get it.)

Our downstairs is just about a complete loss and no we do not have coverage because we were not in a flood zone! Nor do we have insurance for water coming in from the outside. We have a sump pump but it just could not keep up with the lake that developed in my backyard and the inches of rain we had. I know I am not alone in this region, just that I have never been through this before. The weather has been unrelenting the last few weeks. We are looking now to what we can add to our insurance to protect us better for the future. FEMA is in the area and waiting to see if they declare the area a disaster area.

I do so need cheering up. It is certainly heartbreaking to see your hard work like this.

Like Ann said, it is very difficult to get flood insurance in CT and regular homeowners does not cover this type of natural event....

Even with flood covearage the deductible is usually quite high...

Be sure you guard against mold, Judy. That will be your worst enemy...esp. with your asthma. I wish we were closer and not so swamped so I could help you with the cleanup! If you aren't up for doing it all yourselves, try giving ServePro a call. They have experience with this type of thing and do a great job for a fair price.

If you have the standing water out of your basement, a dehumidifier may help to prevent mold and other related misery. Hopefully FEMA will come out with the federal disaster declaration for your area, this will help a lot. If it happens, the FEMA website will have a page dedicated to Conn. disaster relief which will outline what you need to do to apply for assistance. I know the United way is coordinating recovery relief here in RI now, not sure if that's also the case in Connecticut.
Anybody who wants to should be able to buy flood insurance, in fact FEMA encourages it for people who are close to but not necessarily in flood zones. I deal with this a lot at work. A big problem in my city and elsewhere is that people who are in flood zones don't want to pay for flood insurance, which averages over $1,000 per policy per year, then find out that their homeowners insurance doesn't cover it.
I'm forever thankful for my dry basement as we had 8 inches of rain from this storm. Thousands of people got flooded out in RI and a lot of homes have even been condemned.

the water is almost gone, tomorrow my husband will bring back the commercial fans we used the last time. We are going to do a real look around at the foundation and any other things we can add to prevent this from happening again before we rebuild up the downstairs....but for now it is a total loss.

for now it is a total loss.

That's really a shame, Judy! I'm in the process of finishing our cellar (finally!) and was dreading the thought of getting water in there again. I'm sorry that you didn't fair as well as we did. And nailed twice in a month! I feel for you guys!

Wow! Sorry to hear about that!

This is exactly why I own a second story apartment

The latest from CNN.

Rhode Island expects to have I-95 open by this afternoon. A lot of the rivers have not crested yet.

I-95 finally opened though the airport connector road is still flooded. Biggest remaining problem is so many houses that are uninhabitable and may have to be destroyed. Big development and land use changes in this river basin in the last 20 years certainly contributed to the flooding.
Judy, I don't know if you guys have done this but i dug out little trenches and placed PVC pipe in the ground year ago to direct roof water away from the foundation from the downspout. I'm sure that saved me this week. I feel terrible that you're going through this and hope you can salvage something. The good news is hopefully no rain for at least a week.

I dug a trench on the side of my house where I connected the downspouts in the front and back and the pipes to the sump pump to a PVC pipe which I connected to a central pipe which runs out into the street. I also installed a catch basin in my back yard to catch the water and run it through the new drainage system. Eventhiugh I still got water, I think it wouild have been alot worse if I didn't run the pipes

Be sure to have your drywall checked for mold by a qualified inspector. However many inches of wallboard that gets wet more than likely needs to be be replaced. I`m not trying to frighten you, but you could be endangering your whole family by ignoring this. Moldy drywall can release toxins that cause lung problems. I`ve taken nearly 80 hours of OSHA training, so I am well versed in this. Once these particles get into your lungs, they are there for the rest of your life. Feel free to PM me if you need more info.

I checked my drywall and alot of the lower pieces have to be replaced. In addition, many of the studs need to be replaced as well. Basically, I haved to reframe a good part of my basement as well as replace the sheetrock. I am doing this myself along with a friend who is a contractor.
