Saddest Song I Ever Heard

If you really want to have a good cry, play "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" by the BeeGees and Al Green's version of that same song back to back. That'll give those tear ducts a good workout. Oh, for added emotional breakdown, follow the above two with "Misty Blue", by Dorothy Moore. You'll need a bucket to catch all of your tears. Double T, I know I have that song you're talking about... "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again", by Eric Carmen. Trouble is, I can't seem to find it... I want to hear the lyrics and make sure it is the song you mean.

who remembers a song called "Spring", by a young tanya tucker. if you don't cry then, you're dead!

How about "Old Shep", by Elvis Presley. That song is about a boy and his dog... you can probably guess how the song ends. I'm welling up with tears just thinking about it.

Can't forget "Drive", by The Cars, especially sad because the singer (Benjamin Orr) has since passed away.

WTF??? He passed away of what hon? God, I'd DIE for this guy!! Please, please inform!
XOXO

I had a book with the information in it but I loaned it to a friend. Wait just a second and I'll get the details from The Cars website, if one exists...

Okay, Steph, brace yourself. Benjamin Orr, bass player and one of the vocalists of The Cars died of pancreatic cancer at his home in Atlanta on October 3rd, 2000. Sorry to give you the news, Steph.

I have to go with DANIEL, by Elton John and CANDLE IN THE WIND - (PRINCESS DI) also by Elton John.

I think the song which takes the cake for me, though, is SEASONS IN THE SUN - a one-hit wonder by Terry Jacks

Seasons In The Sun Lyrics

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we're nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills or trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.

(Chorus)
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me,
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong.
Too much wine and too much song,
wonder how I get along.
Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little children everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.

(Chorus)
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the wine and the song,
like the seasons, all have gone.

Goodbye, Michelle, my little one.
You gave me love and helped me find the sun.
And every time that I was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
when all the bird are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I wish that we could both be there.

(Chorus)
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the stars we could reach
were just starfishs on the beach

Funny how you don't even have to speak the language to have a song clobber you between the eyes with tears. There's a French singer named Francoise Hardy who sings a beautiful song called, "Rendez-Vous D'Automne". Of course, with all those French titles, I may have confused it with something else. Any French people out there who've heard the song?

awwwwwwwwww~fuck! He WAS MY FAVORITE Car~loved his solo stuff! Thanx for the info hon. I always wondered what happened to him...

XOXO

My brother thinks it's creepy that I know so much about people who have died. I'm like the "Grim Reaper" of the entertainment world. Death is as much a part of life as living is. When someone means something to me, as did Benjamin Orr, I honor their memory and the day they left this world. Speaking of death, another sad song was "Tell Laura I Love Her", about a guy who enters a stock car race to win the $1000 dollar prize so he can buy his girlfriend a wedding ring. You can guess the ending. The song was sung by Ray Peterson.

One song that ALWAYS brings a tear to my eye is 'I dont wanna miss a thing' by Aerosmith. Its a tres beutiful song, especially the violin bit. Then theres 'Join me' by HIM. Its a tragic song about a pair of young lovers in a suicide pact. Alot of HIM songs are about failed romances, but I think that ones their most powerful, though not my favourite.

Either "We Got the Beat" by The Go Go's or "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves.

If you've never heard of Ron Sexsmith, I recommend his album "Retriever", which contains great music and my NEW favorite sad song called, 'I Know It Well'...

"I Know It Well", by Ron Sexsmith

I know the feeling
that's written on your face
where you don't seem quite yourself
you're all out of place
I know it well

Hope springs eternal
twenty-four hours a day
yet still we convince ourselves
it's out of our way
I know it well

When your heart's retreating
from this lonely world
that's the time that you must stay
for it needs you
It needs you

I hope tomorrow
is clearer than today
though in your house sorrow dwells
it never stays
I know it well

Yeah, Double T, my eyes were welling up just looking at the replies too! LOL

Steph, wow... "One Last Cry", beyond the lyrics or the singing, even the music used to make me want to have one last cry!

"By the Time I Get To Phoenix" - Isaac Hayes

"The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" - Various

"Pearls" - Sade

"Lucky Old Sun" - Ray Charles

"Old Man River" - Paul Robeson... UGHHH!!!

Oh yeah, almost forgot, "Mr Bojangles" Sammy

"Send in the Clowns" - Frank Sinatra or Sarah Vaughn version

Maybe the all-time saddest, "Strange Fruit" - Billie Holiday

Might Have Been Mentioned before

but(1) Stevie Nicks "Landslide"-the breakdown and change of a life( which I can really really relate to @ the moment)

(2) Evanescence "My Immortal"(the words tear me apart when I listen)

And the one By (3)LoneStar which I THINK is called "Already There", which is the one they played for 9/11 . That song always brings me to near hysterics.

(4)Amazing Grace on Bagpipes definately.....I always remember the funeral of my ex father in law, who was a member of a Scottish Canadian Regiment.. they played it @ his funeral, the lone Stuart Kilted piper, and there was nary a dry eye @ the gravesite.

A VERY obscure Celtic song called (5) "Dark Alan" by the Scottish Band Capercaillie( it was used in the film Rob Roy, when they are sitting round the campfire).. Even if you don;t understand the lyrics, the melody, like so many Celtic songs, is haunting and brings thrills of sadness to your heart and soul.

(6) "Broken" by Seether and Amy Lee.. another one that sends shivers down the spine.....

(7) Tom Petty "Mary Jane's Last Dance" Don;t know why but this one always got to me too

(8) Elton John "Daniel" and "Empty Garden"

(9) Don Henly "The End of The Innocence"

(10) "Dear God" originally done by XTC, but the cover versions by Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos are mournful( the song is a questioning , angry one that really reminds me of the current state of the world today)

Those are what springs to mind most in this late witching hour, I'm sure there will be more

Ghostie

Man you guys have brought back some memories with these songs.

"She's Leaving Home", by John Lennon & Paul McCartney

Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching her handkerchief
Quietly turning the backdoor key
Stepping outside she is free

She (we gave her most of our lives)
Is leaving (Sacrificed most of our lives)
Home (We gave her everything money could buy)
She's leaving home after living alone for so many years

Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband, "Daddy, our baby's gone"
Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly
How could she do this to me

She (we never thought of ourselves)
Is leaving (never a thought for ourselves)
Home (we struggled hard all our lives to get by)
She's leaving home after living alone for so many years

Friday morning at nine o'clock she is far away
Waiting to keep the appointment she made
Meeting a man from the motor trade

She (what did we do that was wrong)
Is Having (we didn't know it was wrong)
Fun (fun is the one thing that money can't buy)
Something inside that was always denied for so many years

She's Leaving Home (bye, bye).

From the album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band",
by The Beatles

featherfingers... "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" is a great choice here. That song is just heartbreaking...

Two songs that always make me well up:

"In My Life" by the Beatles
"Beautiful Boy" by John Lennon... This one, simply because you can hear how much John loved Sean, and 4 months latr he was dead, and never got to see him "come of age".

I amazed this thread is still going strong. Anyway, from Johnny Cash's final cd "The Man Comes Around", he covers "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". This version is absolutely heart-breaking. Ditto for his cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" from the same cd. I never heard a singer in my life put more emotion into a song as in these two oldies.

I agree with In My Life.

Another good one is Heaven Aint Ready for You Yet by Emmylou Harris

Also, Seven Spanish Angels by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson and Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground by Willie Nelson. You should hear Allison Moorer sing it. She knocks it out of the ballpark

"Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast", by Wayne Newton. I can't imagine being the child of two parents who fall out of love.
