There are definitely ways you could go to a sex shop a bit farther away from where you live so you wouldn't be noticed or recognized by anyone, but I do understand the discomfort of browsing a sex shop.
That being said, I have been bound with the following, which all work well:
any kind of scarves - gauze, silk, cotton, etc. Most department stores, Delias, Old Navy, and the like stock loads of them in the women's section
bondage tape - can be bought at Spencer's Gifts store. Like saran wrap but in tape form, it only sticks to itself
Saran wrap!! - wrapping it really tight around both wrists and around both ankles = great fun. Also a sweaty Lee after some time, but it has worked rather well
a leg brace - they're big enough they can fit tightly around both calves to keep those feet locked in place
rope and dish towels - the towels eliminate any discomfort, though rope by itself doesn't actually hurt that much, just leaves marks for a couple hours.
You mentioned you haven't used rope before, but rope is tied the same way scarves and the like are. There are plenty of websites which can illustrate and explain various basic knots (try Googling "8 basic knots" or something like that). And the best part about rope is that if you're not good at knots yet and have the money to spend on a good deal of rope, you can just cut the rope when you're done!
All that being said, fur lined cuffs have been the most comfortable for me, but women's scarves come in a verrrryyyy close second. I always have two scarves wrapped around my bedpost for "decoration" a.k.a. in case I bring a boy in and we want some impromptu play. I have used up to six at one time for a complicated position, which would set you back around $70 if you buy from Old Navy or a similar store, but I think they're a good investment.
Happy bondage 🙂
