Scooby Doo Question

Ok, i heard my friend's brother talking the other day, and he said that the characters from Scooby Doo were based on the the reputaions of the major colleges in Massachusetts (i.e. the pot head, the preppy, the egg head and the stuck up bitch). if anyone could shed more light on this, i'd be rather interested to hear about it.

i also heard that Shaggy collected belt buckles and wore a different one in every episode. i didn't even know you could see his belt buckle. is this true or is it just a clever (or not so clever) ruse?

Scooby and Shaggy had to have been potheads! They were paranoid, always seeing ghosts that no one else saw, and they always had the munchies. Fred was a questionable character. Some people say he was the gay one, but you have to wonder why he would always suggest splitting up. "You and Scooby go search the kitchen, the girls and I will go THIS way where we can have a thre--urm, search for clues!"

I think that red hanky around Fred's neck gave him the "queer" tag. But he always went off (hur hur) with Daphne or Velma or both. A pothead dawg... Heh heh.

Scooby Doo started as a cartoon version of the Live action sitcom "The adventures of Dobie Gillis" (sp?) When proper rights didn't get got, they changed the Dobie character into Shaggy, added the rest of the crew (all archtypes (prety girl, smart girl, handsome guy) and scooby (every cartoon had a animal character) and there you have it.

That's my impression too - Fred is kinda like Dobie, while Shaggy is Maynard.
