I was watching a "Linken Park" vs "Bullet for my valentine" on a music channel and my house mate was not very complementary about BFMV, saying it sounds horrible. I pointed out that he likes "30 seconds from mars" and the singer in that band screams a lot.

I didn't win the argument :cynical:

How much (if any) screaming do you like in metal songs?

I dont like excessive amounts of screaming in any genre of music. A certain amount I suppose its appropriate to convey the emotion of the lyrics. I like metal a lot, its one of my favorite genres. 🙂

Love Metal. If the singer can pull it off and it adds to the song, I'm all for it. To me Jared does it in the right place at the right time and it certainly makes a point. 🙂

It depends on what you mean by "screaming". I mean, Slayer can really pull it off. The "metal voice" can be powerful if backed by good instrumentals, but if the lead singer is using it as crutch for not knowing how to sing, it shows.

I really agree with this statement. It really depends on what the definition of screaming is. I like the whaling high falsetto type of screaming. The best vintage examples in my book are Ian Gillian, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, and Pre-90's Geoff Tate. But the raspy screamo yelling that so many bands do these days just grate my eardrums to the point where I just want to hit them square in the balls with a sledgehammer. Maybe they can achieve REAL screaming then!

Ah, the age-old scream argument(anti-metalist)...

Their are many artists, that has proven this argument as - idiotic. Look at Korn for instance; especially, the album, Issues.

Sure, there are plenty of musicians - that use, scream; as a form of artistic expression. And, destroys the equilibrium of their spectator. For example, Cannibal Corpse...

Too place all these artists in one hat, does an injustice to many great artists!

I'm all for screaming in metal, most of my albums by the artists that I like you have to read the lyrical booklet to understand what they are saying :bouncybou

My best friend saw Children of Bodom in San Fransisco when was he working on a Cruise Liner for two years, when they came to San Fransisco and played with Through The Eyes of The Dead as COB's opening act band. I think he told me that was the first time that Children of Bodom had been in the united states playing Live was that day in San Fransisco. I don't get to attend as many live concerts as I would LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE to with me working Monday to Friday and since most live concerts are on Weekday's. So I can't go to many of them 🙁 But I try to attend a few a year when I can. My best friend is more of the Heavy Metal Dictionary then I am he knows all kind's of old school metal related answers he really is bright when it comes to that more then me. But I'm still a fan of the genre myself :banelvis:

Lol at you thinking Bullet For My Valentine is metal .

😵 okie and what would you consider metal? Not all metal is thrash and doom.

Screaming is a bit generic in that it could also cover high pitch, grunting/deep voice, crying and shouting angrily. So just like there are many ways to play an electric guitar there are also many ways to scream. Nightwish and a few other female fronted bands use a "beauty and the beast" approach with the woman singing normally/classically and the guy grunting. In flames primarily shout angrily in all their songs. Edguy and Guns&Roses sing high pitch. I don't mind screaming providing it isn't the primary focus.

The original metal screamer was of course Ian Gillan who in an interview once said " ..there isnt a musical term for what I do ,so I just call it screaming "

I like it sometimes, but more often than not, I'm not a fan. I judge on a case by case basis.
