Lately, I look at the title of a thread, and think
"That seems interesting." but when I go to read it,
there's no punctuation, many of the words are
misspelled, and it takes too much effort to untangle
what the heck the original poster (or some of
the respondees) are trying to say, that I just
close it, and move on in confusion.

I have even gotten to the point where a "U" or an "R"
as a substitution is recognisable as language,
but for the love of reading, can't people spell check
and proof read/edit their posts to make them
understandable?!

Yes, it's depressing sometimes to see posts with gross errors in grammar or spelling, such as confusion about when to use "there," "their," and "they're." I tend to ignore them and skip to the next post.

but yes i hate abbreviations..usually if i receive a pm like that i just delete it..

It's a pity, sure. But it's symptomatic of the spellcheck/text message generation. No turning back the tide there. I only read those who demonstrate they know something about spelling, punctuation and grammar.

By and large, I figure that most people avoid posts and threads like that.

Nobody generally gives too many of them the time of day...Unless, to laugh at them. The general hub of offenders tend to trickle from sites that consider posting like this the norm. Such as video game sites, music sites, YouTube, etc.

Most times, they get spanked back into lurker mode for it. Which is pretty much what they deserve.

I *wish* that were the reality, but I see far too many long threads
with terrible, terrible grammar and spelling all throughout.
I'm working on avoiding them, but as a voracious reader, it's
hard to completely have that happen.

I couldn`t agree more! It is frustrating to decipher such posts! I can overlook much of it,as I often get carried away typing with my one good finger,but some of the posts are just impossible to figure out!
As for "cyberspeak"- I`ll never understand it!Living among and working with the military has filled up my brain`s capacity for abreviations and such!!!

Or the lazy ones that feel compelled to respond on every thread. They can't be bothered to take the time to get things right. Don't you just want to say, "shut the F up, you moron!" (sighs) Everyday is like a trip to idiot island with some of them...

There were quite a few posts like that, where I just couldn't figure out what people were actually saying. When I saw others responding to such posts, I honestly believed, that me not being a native speaker was the reason why I didn't really understand though. It's seriously quite a relief to see you guys having the same problem.

My primary focus of study in college is on the English language. Yes, it does get on my nerves trying to decipher grammatically incorrect posts; but hey, its the internet, this is to be expected somewhat 🙂

What truely annoys me is when people deliberately set out to make their posts ineligible *see games like World of Warcraft for a perfect example of this. I promise you by the end of the day you will have gone mad*

I agree completely. I can't stand reading posts like that, it's not that hard to write with atleast readable spelling and grammar. I mean, sure if you're a bad speller, it's understandable, but when you using horrible grammar, like "dis" and others that are much worse, there's really no need of it, people are just too lazy to write in complete sentences with readable grammar, and it really is uncalled for.

Ehhhh...It depends. Some people make great points with creative spelling.

If the content is insightful and relatively understandable, with some spelling or grammatical errors, it's not a problem.

Many of us are not language-oriented. Some are more adept with numbers. Others with images.

BUT if it's ridiculously obnoxious & massive pain in the butt to unravel,
then I agree, the poster should make a better effort to communicate

Otherwise, inappropriate comments and images bother me far more...

And if inappropriate content is offered by those who claim mastery over language or presentation, so much the worse.

As an English major, nothing irks me more than multiple abbreviations like "OMG," "UR," etc. Even worse are the purposely misspelled words like "kewl" or "teh."

I can look past the occasional typo or spelling mistake, for sure, but when I come upon a post that looks like this...




... I disregard the thread entirely.

I really don't have a problem with using abbreviations...we live in a streamlined world, more and more so each day, so it seems. If all you have to convey are abbreviations and intentional misspellings, then there's little point in paying much more attention to you. We've had this thread before on this board...and in the past, some have come in, defending the right of people to do this, and it's really entertaining. "I have the right to be a retarded imbecile, who are you to deny me such?"

This IS the internet, and there are like 30,000 members in this forum, so you have to expect a few to "speak in their own language". Do I like it? NO Do I agree with it? NO, and last but not least, do I pay attention to it? NO.

Oddly enough it requires way more concentration to type like that that it does with proper grammar.

I am a terrible speller and get carried away typing, but I do try hard to correct myself. I can live with folks making a few errors in spelling and such, but what really winds me up is two things:- Firstly posters who dont read my posts correctly, and base their replies on what they would have preferred me to have said. What is the point of having an argument with someone about something they did not say?

Secondly, I always skip any thread or post that features enormous chunks of quoted material from previous posts, it makes for very tedious reading, and it is a very lazy way of responding, its much better to reply in a way which includes references to other posts in your own words. Its much easier for others to read.
