Okay, apparently, I'm getting mixed info (I should have asked more questions before posting) on this subject.

I read in a post above that the forum was actually "locked down" and that people were shut out of sections of the forum.

Maybe there was a bit of "falling sky" in these posts. because I didn't see any of it, I'm going on what I am hearing.

I consider it a cheap shot at Drew70, who unfortunately, isn't around to defend himself.

I also consider it bad timing, but hey, it's your forum, so just do whatever you want.

I assure you, drew70 was not on anyone's mind for even the briefest of moments while this monumental and well-executed prank was being conceieved and implemented.

Yes, for a brief period of time, the TMF forum was gone and the Crystal Light & Annie Hall forum, a parody, was up in its place. So people who wanted to use the real forum had to wait a few hours. And considering that we're talking about moderators who are giving their services away for free to provide this forum to all of us, and that the creative artwork that went into this parody was part of what they were giving away for free to us, I continue to think that it was equivalent to writing us a song, and that the people who are giving them a hard time are doing something equivalent to saying "I hate that lousy song you wrote for me."
 
Let me add that I'm sure the reference to a shot at Drew70 must be simply a parody on the kind of wild suspicions that were flying around here yesterday. Maybe as a public service somebody should offer a parody-appreciation class here.

Well put to my thinking. Anyone remember just about a short week ago when some people had minor changes in their post count ranking? When this hit last night I could only think HDS or Myriads had figured out what they wanted to do. So last evening for two hours I treated the whole prank as a walk through a new museum. You had to check every nook and cranny and examine everything you could find from the slight difference in lettering of the screen names to ranking to the false posts themselves. I had the honor of holding the rank of Minor Star/Loser. It was a very good joke that had to take a lot of time to perfect and pull off. So lighten up and give the Mods a nod for prank well thought out and very well executed. They both officiate and take a lot of crap keeping this sight running and as stated above we are riding this train for free.

I for one enjoyed last night and was a bit disappointed when it ended because I didn't get a chance to see everything.
 
I agree, Kered. Regardless of the michevious nature of those sonofa...

They put a lot of time into creating hysteria and I was trying to field 946830698309682096826 IMs and read everything..

They should post a link for our viewing pleasure. 😉
 
I'd only wished i'd taken more screencaps.. i thought it would be up longer than it was. It was absolutely beautiful! My inner Loki was quite pleased.
 
I thought a lot of the stuff was just for show, untill I clicked on a couple of the subforums and saw they even included posts.

Yes, I didn't think to look over my own fake post for fun things because I was too caught up in reading stuff like AnnieHall is my homosexual life partner and other treasures. There was so much going on I don't remember what the subject of my fake post was.
 
Glad to see the artists are getting credit for their work here. And indeed, there should be a way of getting to see it again. I'd recommend setting up some links, and locking out new posts so that it doesn't actually become a competing forum (believe me, that can happen). Because yes, it is like a museum. We have some very creative people here.

I don't think anyone thought it was anything more than a prank, but I do think the level of displeasure found in some reactions was informative. I hope people will think about that.

On leaving, time will reveal the substance beneath people's stated intentions.

"Prank", "lesson", "reminder", “what happened?”. I'm sure you'll hear all sorts of things. It doesn't matter what it was. You can talk about “community” all you like, but at the end of the day, this is neither your Forum nor ours to say what should or shouldn't be done with it. We have no ownership here. It's Jeff's. He can change it to the "All Snake-Handling, Square-Dancing and Kazoo-Playing Forum", or play continuous loops of him bare-bottomed and subjected to a spanking machine, and ain't nothin’ you're gonna do to change it.

I like you, Dalekfire. I like anyone with a rational mind and genuine concern. It’s nice that you’re thinking of other people. But simply, your opinion of "uncalled for", just like the opinions of myself and others, are irrelevant. It ain’t a democracy. It will be run how the leadership wants to run it, jokes and all. Nothing against you or anyone -- just a simple statement of fact. That's that, it's not gonna' change, and that shouldn't be forgotten.

That said, I think the intent was just to poke a little fun at something. I can’t say I know what that something was. Personality worship? Attention mongering? Impetuousness? Meteoric rises in influence? I don’t know. Further, I don’t care. Though I think it would be foolish to believe it was in any way a slight toward Drew70 as someone suggested.

Beyond that, estimate the effects as you will.

People will indicate the environment they wish to cultivate by those people and behaviors to which they offer reward and tribute. Consider who received validation (directly or backhandedly -- however you want to consider it, if you think that makes any difference), and consider those whose profile was raised. Consider how many people long before this prank offered continuous validation and various forms of tribute, and how many will do so long after. Understand that to receive that level of recognition, good-natured ribbing, and acceptance from this group, those are the models of behavior people should follow.

If it is your interest to achieve those results from this set of people, your path is clear.

If it is not, seek your own path.

If the sort of behavior that’s rewarded here doesn't sit well with you, either let it roll off, or perhaps you should consider this as a sign that it's best to move on.

There are, of course, alternatives. Perhaps they are better recipients of your patronage and participation.
