Soaring gasoline prices

Nice cartoon.

On a serious note. I heard that oil fineries work at about 97% of their capacity in the US and that following the recent bad weather, some refineries might be out of action for a week or more sending prices rising still further.

I don't care what gas prices are as long as it's available and there are no long lines at the gas stations like there were in the mid 70's.

Ok let me back off a bit... I don't care about the price as long as it stays under 4 bucks a gallon. After that I'll care, because 4 bucks a gallon would have a serious impact on lots of people.

I'm talking about the US, where we've had it easy so far.

it woudn't be so bad if health care didn't average 500 - 600 dollars a month.

Time to get rid of the 'ol SUV! Pump prices are killing me already! Gas prices at 3-4 bucks a gallon would have me ready to jump out of a window! Is there any end in sight?????? :disgust:

we need renewable energy already!!!!!!

Im tired of having to depend on other countries for oil and what not. And its the exons and texicos and what not are keeping research on renewable fuels from happening. How long will we have to be on our knees because the Saudi's can't or wont produce fast enough. And its clear that emissions from burning gas and oil are messing up the planet. So why not use renewable energy. Sure some of the budget is going to it. But its time to step up the effort.

I agree, knogs. I think it's time the government stop the big oil companies from buying up every alternative energy startup company that comes along. Soaring fuel costs are just one of many good reasons. Environment concerns are up there as well.

I'm with you guys. We (Lazzy and I) personally can not take this anymore. We are a low income family to begin with, and have no choice but to drive a minivan since we have 4 kids combined, so we're at the mercy of the pumps. What hurts us most is the fact we have to drive over 700 miles round trip each weekend we take the kids. Add that to Lazzy's 60 minute round trip commute to work each day, and we can barely afford to maintain our shelter and household expenses.

Today the gas prices in our city reached $3.19 a gallon for regular unleaded. We're already screwed....even if it DIDN'T get any higher. But that's a laugh, for the new spike in prices is only beginning. *sigh* And we have propane heat too. We're gonna wind up sacrificing food for heat this winter if prices don't come down soon.

You know, I remember my son's father (sperm donor) telling me about a program he watched where someone had developed a fuel source that got nearly 100 miles to the gallon. That person fell off the face of the earth.

Every time someone develops something that would benefit us, they disappear from the face of the earth. Why is that?

I hate big oil and big business!!!

Right now, I'm driving a SUV. By this time next week, it could be very different. I'm not above trading in the "ride" for the ride.

its so funny we just bought a honda pilot suv. i love it but our gas prices today went over the three dollar mark. it was a third full today when i filled it up cost forty some dollars. thank goodness we dont travel that much. this is ridiculous and i am with kis. i'm sick of big oil companies taking over. i heard that in thirty some years oil will be obsolete wonder if that is true?

isabeau :wow:

The oil companies aren't the bad guys, I think the car companies should probably be chastised just as much. But really its that we as americans had'nt really pushed for alternative fuels. We sit at home and complain but heck we got a good system of government that alot dont even seek to use. Maybe we should get a patition or start an interest group (shudders) and let the politians know that we are sick of relying on other countries for fuel. Just like the oil embargo of the old days, we dont seem to learn from history I guess.

missing the point

Wait! Wait! Aren't we missing the point? Isn't someone going to blame the terrorists for the high oil prices and tie this to the WMD and the war in Iraq and ....oh, sorry, sorry, got carried away there for a minute, I forgot, this is all Bush's fault cause he lies to us about Iraq and WMD and...no, no, sorry, I'll get it straight in a minute. Its the fault of the liberals, I mean the conservatives are to blame, I mean, it is a conspiracy isn't it?
If you want to be real objective about all this, the high oil prices are clearly the fault of all the tickle people out there. If they'd quit using baby oil on feet and tummies and such to make them more ticklish we wouldn't have an oil shortage and the price of gas would be like 25 cents a gallon and there would be peace in the world. Damn tickle fanatics. Can't we all just get along? :bouncybou

Happy tickling to you and yours.
Etienne

Coupla observations:

1. The 100 miles-per-gallon stuff and the oil companies buying up that
technology is urban myth material.

2. We, as consumers, are being conditioned to spend much more of our
income on oil products (heating, gasoline, diesel). We'll see an ugly spike
soon ($3.75 for 87 octane, $4.05 for 91) then be 'happy and relieved' to see the price return to $2.60 for 87 octane.
You'll never see under $2.00 again, trust me.

I have more observations, but I said I only had a couple, so I'll stop now.

(remember sugar and coffee ??) heh heh

This wasn't urban myth material-this was late night news material nearly 20 years ago. This wasn't made up, it was news. There was still some truth being told in the media back then. And he wasn't the only one who watched the program either.

Mass Transit?

Isn't it peculiar how all the other developed nations have major mass transit networks that reduce reliance on gasoline-driven, high-pollution content, highly-inneffecient personal vehicles?

Isn't it also peculiar that those same nations aren't really too upset about "skyrocketing" gas prices, particularly when gas there has often been several times what it is here in the states for years anyway?

Hmmmm. Makes you wonder why nobody even mentions the possibility of subways or streetcars here.

...a bit late for that, isn't it? Even if they ever got the ball rolling on mass transit as it exists in Europe, by the time they finished it we'd all probably be long dead, or too old to hobble to the station. It's the American way ...they couldn't build something without delays and cost over-runs could they? How un-American!

...but I'm with you on your comment. I've felt that way for years now.

I feel like nowadays I'm working just to pay for gas to get to work. It's bullshit, and I fear this could destroy alot of peoples lives. It is my honest belief that the world as we know it is headed straight for mass chaos. Reading some of the stories about the aftermath of Katrina, and how looters are going straight for the guns makes me feel that even moreso.

Consume less: save money but live less extravagantly.

Whether we like it or not, rising energy costs will force Americans to become more energy conscious and resourceful. As can be expected, much kicking and screaming will follow.

With these prices, im sure the dirtbags will be out siphoning gas tanks. be on the look out.

I am so sick of these prices. Gas in Baltimore has gone up a full dollar since yesterday. That's right. ONE FRICKIN' DAY. I don't care what their excuse is. Katrina is a horrible tragedy, yes. But you know what? The freaking WAR did not cause gas prices to rise as much as it has now. This is price gauging, pure and simple. I won't listen to any of their bullshit.

I'm now in the process of mounting automated, infra red/motion/sound/ detection activated 50 caliber chain guns on my roof. After that, I'm having the great wall of China built around my house. I'm keeping my Rotties inside the house, just in case some maggot does get through all my security with only one bullet in them. The Rott's will have great fun finishing them off! I'll take pictures if anyone wants!

It's one of those things that us as americans need to start lobbying for. More reusable fuels so we can be less dependant on oil from the outside. One of the main problems is that americans are too short sighted to fight for such a cause. We want things now now now, thats why we have the same problem that plagued us during the last oil embargo. Furthermore, terrorists arn't really to blame, the war actually is. Don't get me wrong I think we shoulda went to war, but the terrorists are fighting the only way they really can, and it truely is intelligent on their part.

I wish i saw this thread before I posted a new one in the politics and religion section . To save me the trouble of re-writing it PLEASEEEEEE go read it ! I seriously think it may work.

High gas prices spells the end for American "Manifest Destiny" suburbia. At last, we'll have to start living responsibly. Once again, gas prices aren't high to anyone but us - they're still quite a bit lower than most of the rest of the world. Artificially low, in fact, which is why this is just a correction (economically speaking) and not some late-breaking trend.

There's no time better than now for changing things, since the past is lost to us and the future is racing near. 🙂

Also, your sig pic keeps instinctively making me cover my feet up
