When did this zombie thing take hold in pop culture? I don't seem to remember it being a huge deal until fairly recently but now zombie references seem to be everywhere. Was there a film or television show I missed that popularized it, or had I just not been paying attention until now?

Nah, both too recent. I trace the revival to 28 Days Later in 2002 (even though scientifically speaking those weren't real zombies), and the Dawn of the Dead remake in 2004. Also, these are where we got fast zombies from, and fast zombies are way more threatening than classic zombies. Made 'em scary again.

... and before 28 Days later there was the Resident Evil video-games, which let people try out zombie-killin'.

The general feeling I've gotten from it is that the younger generations have kind of a sick infatuation with gore and violence, and a zombie apocalypse would allow for a guilt-free ("they're already dead!") chance to just mow down dozens of mofos with badass weapons.

Yeah, but people weren't all "BRAIIIINSSS" and making facebook groups like "You're a great friend but, if we get chased by zombies I'm tripping you..." in 04. 😛
