barefoot = one word.

bare feet = two separate words.

i'm sorry if this has already been addressed--i think i've seen a similar thread--but part of me dies every time i see this mix up happen.

Emily my dear, you need a hobby LOL Then you won't have time to worry about things like this!

i would say something bitter and defensive, but i have to refrain from doing so because you're so correct it hurts. 😛

barefoot = adjective defining a condition
bare feet = noun (feet) modified by an adjective (bare)

I've certainly seen it addressed before, but it hasn't been often enough, so thank you.

(In fact, I believe the last time I saw it, it was done using equals signs in that same way, which aren't the appropriate signs in this case.)

You're not alone, Emily. I hate when people write "bare foot" instead of "barefoot" and "barefeet" instead of "bare feet". It probably wouldn't bother me so much if it didn't happen so often.

Well, you can't "be" "bare feet" - unless you are, in fact, a pair of feet. Most people are either too ignorant or too lazy to bother with typing like an educated person.

Yup. Barefoot can also be an adverb though, I think. "She ran barefoot through the woods." Barefoot is modifying ran. Although I'm not sure, you can't make it "barefootly." Maybe you avoid the whole thing by saying "she ran without shoes through the woods. ???

"Her otherwise perfect and smooth soles were progressively cut and scraped by the brush and twigs underfoot."

Sorry.

Next to the whole 'ler/'lee thing, this is my biggest pet peeve ever regarding how people type 'round here. It's like, "hit. the friggin'. spacebar."

They're/Their/There

and

your/you're/ur

That bugs me even more.

She ran barefoot through the blanket of broken glass and hot coals.

Her bare foot was stinkin' up the whole room.
