Stand Up Virgin No Longer

I am no longer a stand up comic virgin. I waded the waters of open mic (admittedly in a very friendly environment) with much better results than I thought. Of the three bits in my set (plus one tiny bridge) 2 of the 3 got decent laughs. The middle one was flatter than a Calvin Klein model on heroin, but it was my first time and I think I did a lot better than I expected.

I need to slow down a bit and learn to read my audience better rather than go with routine if pacing is not working out.

But you can't do it unless you start somewhere, and so begins my road to stand up comedy.

I am going to try and get the funds together for the advanced class.

(the performance was at the San Francisco Comedy College off of Mason St) they do free shows at 6pm to 8pm on Fridays.

Take it from a semi-pro (ive been doing amateur stand up for about 8 years now) that it takes a lot of guts to get up there the first time and each time it gets eaiser and easier. I only do shows occasionaly as of late..my medical condtion is right now still unsatble so I havent done a set in a month or 2 but I stil have the desire and am trying to keep myself sharp.
If at anytime youd like a little help, advice or want to throw a joke my way PM me anytime.

And classes are a good idea especially if you want to do improv instead of a regular routine. I love improv.

Bagelfather, congratulations on losing your stand-up virginity! It's funny how you phrased the title of your post, because stand-up comedy is kind of like sex: the first time, you don't know what you're doing, you make mistakes, and the audience (your partner) isn't pleased. But as you continue to have stand-up, it gets easier and easier (as Rob posted), and in no time at all, you're a stand-up machine! Your stand-up performance will improve dramatically, and you'll be able to satisfy the audience every time. Just don't wear out your microphone. Seriously, that's great news. It's great to be able to make people laugh without having to tickle them. 😀
