There was a man who computed his taxes for 1998 and discovered that he owed $3407.
He packaged up his payment and included this letter:

Dear IRS:

Enclosed is my 1998 Tax Return & payment. Please take note of
the attached article from the USA Today newspaper. In the article, you will see that the Pentagon is paying $171.50 for hammers and NASA has paid $600.00 for a toilet seat.

Please find enclosed four toilet seats (value $2400)

and six hammers (value $1029).

This brings my total payment to $3429.00.

Please note the overpayment of $22.00
and apply it to the "Presidential Election Fund,"
as noted on my return.

Might I suggest you send the above mentioned fund
a "1.5 inch screw."
(See attached article... HUD paid $22.00 for a 1.5 inch Phillips Head Screw.)

It has been a pleasure to pay my tax bill this year,
and I look forward to paying it again next year.

Sincerely,
A satisfied taxpayer

At work, we've got this system that helps us to research things we need to order for maintenance purposes, identifying items by part number, name, etc., but you can look up just about anything on there that any one department of the DoD may need at one point or another (i.e. beer, condoms, a horse, etc.). The government IS charged ridiculous rates for some pretty common purchases. In my experiences, the thing that bugged me the most involved a particular piece of telephone equipment that has a numbered keypad on it. Sometimes, the little numbers get lost, and have to be replaced to make the equipment "SL-3 complete". For one of the little plastic numbers (which are all differently priced.) it costs $630!

all those items that cost so much probably is bought off a company that is owned by a friend of someone big in the goverment. Why else would you think the cost would be so high???
