1984: February 14 - British ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean score 12 perfect 6.0s for their interpretation of Ravel's Boléro in the 1984 Winter Olympics. They win the gold medal for ice dancing.

July 19th: Vice President George H. W. Bush announces that Christa McAuliffe, a New Hampshire schoolteacher, will ride in the Spce Shuttle Challenger. She was later killed when that Space Shuttle exploded.
