Well I just returned home from a day at the nearest Military Base where I and several friends spent all day putting together care packages and helping get responders off to help those affected in the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

As I volunteer often with the Red Cross, but I am unable to travel there as much as I want to due to my medical restrictions, I am doing what I can to help those that need so much in a time where they have lost everything. And this was not a small area. A city of 2 million, losses of 100,000 people or more. An area that was the poorest in the Western Hemisphere in the first place.

I left this morning at 4am and just now got back home. A lot of pain I am personally in but its nothing compared to what those in Haiti have to deal with. Its times like this that remind me no matter the pain or problems I have it pales in comparison with troubles in other places in the world. Right now in Haiti, in Port-au-Prince around a million or more people languish without basic necessities, medical care, and the things we all take for granted everyday. The children of course are suffering the worse, especially the youngest which don't understand what is going on but are dealing with the terror.

Dozens of aftershocks still have people sleeping in the streets, and in a country without building codes perhaps is safer than being indoors but still is a tragedy.

I hope anyone that reads this, that can.....give. Be it 1 dollar, 5 dollars or more, give. Myself I have canceled my upcoming Valentines Day cookout I do with military families and the toy give away for the children and have taken all the funds I would have used and donated it all to the American Red Cross to help in Haiti. I also called several of my donors and asked them not to contribute to my funds to just give.

There are a lot of great charities that you can give to:
http://www.redcross.org/
http://www.unicef.org/
http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn_2.nsf
And there are ways to use you cell phone to text a donation:
Text--Haiti to 90999, this will give a $10 donation to the American Red Cross
Text--Yele to 501501, this will give a $5 donation to musician Wyclef Jean's Yele foundation.
Text--Haiti to 25383, this will give a $5 donation to the Internal Rescue Committee.
All these texts will appear for the amounts on your cell phone bill.

Lastly, I am surprised this is the first thread on the subject...and I hope it wont be the last.

Been following this all day. So many painfully sad stories! I started to post about it 3 different times and simply couldn't put words to it.

did anyone else hear the ultra-conservative media personalities blaming the earthquake on Black people? my father told me that Limbaugh called the earthquake punishment against the Black Haitian population and a warning for President Obama. I understand there's such thing as shock-jocking...but WTF, mate?!

thanks for all your work, RobAce. gonna donate now.

I certainly don't want this thread to turn into a discussion on how people are reacting. But the exact comments were that Obama was reacting faster to this crisis than other things recently because he wants to connect more with dark-skinned blacks than his normal light-skinned ones. I do not recall hearing him say it was punishment, just saying Obama was using it for political gain.

But again, I do not want to turn this into left/right on this issue. To me this is a human issue that should be above the petty nonsense of the left/right.

People in Haiti could care less about what anyone says, they have bigger issues than this.

And thanks to all for you words, and thanks to all that give.

Rob

i just donated to the redcross this is so terrable i hate hering of this kind of stuff going on

I respect your position, Rob. wasn't trying to turn the discussion towards politics, and I guess my father misheard/misinterpreted the commentary. you're in the right correcting me. thanks again.

Thanks for calling in on tonight's show Rob, and thanks for all of your efforts and the things you do.....

Our donation has been made....

That's fantastic, Rob. I am glad you are able to help out. 🙂 I myself was only able to donate, due to school and limited time. Keep up the good work!

What a horrible tragedy 🙁 The texting option doesn't work up here in Canada, but there are plenty of ways to give, which I plan on doing. Being a border town, we have quite a few Haitians here who are understandably worried sick about their homeland 🙁

Text sent. Damn that feels good. I'm sure there's more I can do and will look at the links you provided. Thanks Rob. 🙂

This horrific event might turn out to be the complete epic disaster in the two-hundred year history of this very sad place. And, that's really saying something.

I've been watching coverage all day again while I do site work. There was one point, while they were working to free an 11 yo girl, that they were on live. As they attempted to pull a dead body out of the way so that they could get at her, a limb of the body pulled loose. Whoever was watching at that moment witnessed the horror. (They've since editted it out of the coverage.) Thankfully, they were finally able to get the girl free. Last I heard, they'd stabilized her enough that she was on her way to a more advanced facility where they could deal with her crushed leg more effectively.

Horrors and miracles intermingled. That about sums up the situation. It's going to take a lonnnnng time for them to recover....if they ever do.

Thank you

(Once again, that ^) and

Rob, thanks for the info on where to donate, and for your work.

Yes, thank you so much, this thread may be the only one? but you pack so much relevant information into the first post that it's worth at least five.

My firm has spear-headed a relief effort for Haiti. Good to see people really care in other's times of need.

Watching the updates on the news is almost too much to deal with. Hell has paid a visit to earth in Hatai..

In the most highly populated area, which was also the most heavily damaged, there were three hospitals and a handful of independant clinics. All three hospitals were heavily damaged. Only one is functioning at all. But, even if they were all up and running, the numbers of injured would still be far beyond their capacity.

One of the things we need to keep in mind here is that these folks had little to start with. Their "big hospital" was smaller than a single wing of most hospitals we know. There's no power...and no fuel to power generators in most areas. The limitted supplies they started off with were either destroyed or used on the first patients that made it to help.

The same is true of the airport and port. The airport has a single runway and no working tower. The port, which was pretty small to begin with, is totally inaccessible, it's single heavy lifting crane toppled and tangled in the bay. With both the ariport and port heavily damaged, even much of the people and supplies that have arrived in country are sitting around waiting for some way to be transported to where they're needed.

It's a nightmare situation. We need to give a lot of credit to all who've gone to try to help. :bowing:
