The Feather Myth of Tickling

We've all seen it in cartoons and kids' shows a million times: The Hero gets captured and tied up by The Villain, who intends to interrogate him. The Villain utters the classic line "We have ways of making you talk" and pulls out a feather. The Hero's eyes get wide and he says, "NO! Anything but that!" The Villain proceeds to feather tickle the Hero's bare feet who proceeds to laugh his head off and squirm around as if he's getting bamboo underneath his fingernails.

We all know that feathers in real life do not often produce those results, especially on the soles of feet. I guess we could call it the "Feather Myth of Tickling."

But in every myth, there is at least a grain of truth, right?

Any thoughts, opinions, insights?

Out of all the women that I have dated, only a mere 1 was feather ticklish. I think its a rare thing. Makes me cringe when I see a video, and they pull out a feather. I usually just move on to the next one because its probably a fake. There are some women out there who are though!

Yes, the reaction is most likely exaggerated since cartoons are themselves exaggerations of people and circumstances blahblahblah, though I know there are people that are responsive to feathers. Between the toes is usually a good spot lol

(I think) it has a large amount to do with how well maintained (the foot) is. I think that a softer (more sensitive?) foot offers better response to a feather than one with rougher skin. Note that rougher skin doesn't imply the lack of ticklishness but rather the amount of force required for the stimulus to actually, you know, tickle.

So I don't think it's a myth but rather requires certain specific situations to be met. Further, feathers (while not torturous) are more effective on other parts of the body (breasts for example) for what I believe to be the same reason.

But, by far and large I think a feather is used in cartoons and whatever because it's more of an icon of tickling than anything else. I'm not sure where, when or why that association has come up but I don't know that it necessarily involved the feet, which are also (one of the) icons of the body that are associated with tickling.

It's probably just two separate icons that (uninformed) people think of when they think of tickling, so they just group them together despite not actually being a great match, if that makes sense.

I've noticed a lot of stories with that same theme, too. Makes for a nice story, but if you're not feather ticklish (and I'm not), then it's a little hard to get into the story and imagine if you were the poor victim when you can't relate.

If a nice stiff feather is used my wife is VERY ticklish on her feet when used. As a matter of fact, she responds far better to light tickling with fingers, feathers or artist paint brushes than she does to rough tickling. Add some lotion and a feather's affect on her feet and toes is waaaaaaay magnified.

I agree with Annie. I think in general, the reaction we see with a feather is a bit more exaggerated. However, in the few times i have used a feather, I found the best reaction to be in between the toes. But it was not extreme laughter by any means. However, every person is different and some may have more of a reaction than others, which would be perfectly fine with me 🙂

OMG I love the feather!!! On my soles, I giggle. Sliding in and out of my toes is super ticklish. Overall I'd say the cartoons are a little too dramatic but yes, my husband gets some good reactions from the feather!

Just like everything else concerning tickling, everyone is different. But, like many say here, unless the feet are so well taken care of and so tenderly soft, I have a hard time believing that a soft fluffy feather is going to have much of an effect on feet. There's just too much tough skin on the feet. The center of the arches can be soft enough to possibly feather ticklish, but not on many. A stiff feather maybe, but not those fluffy ones. Just my opinion...

Whoa ... waitaminute.

You're saying that cartoons are not accurate portrayals of real life occurrences?

Say wha-a-a-a-a...?! :illogical

I suppose a more accurate statement would be that the feather's use as a universal tickling tool is highly suspect, as those who respond to it tend to be in the minority. But they are out there.

Maybe there are some rare exceptions but it's pretty much a myth. Feathers don't tickle me. I've tried tickling guys with them and couldn't.

A good, stiff feather can work, but soft ones don't do shit.

On the contrary, feathers are very good tickling tools in my case. I recently had a feather related tickling experience and let's just say it was intense in more ways than one. I think it depends on the type of feathers that are used honestly. The stiffer feathers are great for the feet and upper body, while the softer ones may be great for tickling the ears and neck. I like the use of feathers lol, I think it adds something a little different from time to time.

I had a tickle session with Lolo from Tickle Abuse and the best reaction I received from her was when I tickled her neck with a billowy ostrich feather. That was the only type of tickling she just could not take. It drove her vrazy.
I had a similar reaction from my wife. I used a stiff turkey feather on her neck and that drove her nuts too. Even after I removed the feather from her neck SHE STILL FELT LIKE IT WAS THERE!!!
Between the toes also works well, but the neck it torturous.

Feathers can be arousing or annoying, but they don't really tickle bad. Not my kind of tickling.

Yeah, I think the feather is more symbolic than anything. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are those out there that are feather ticklish. I just think that there is more of a psychological thing going on when a feather is used.

I think it is about time those cartoons arrived in the 21st century, and started using something like a Hitachi Magic Wand vibrator.

I only hated when a character would pull out a feather and tickle the other person with the shoe still on the foot! I was always like wtf? really?
