My older brother informed me (correctly, as it turns out) that Charlie in the song is an African American, as were the members of the group that sang it, The COASTERS. 😀
 
It was a big hit back in 1959 when it came out.
The main character, Charlie Brown, has the same streak of self-pity as Amish. All he ever says is "Why is everybody always picking on ME?"
