The simplest answer is that they have developed a different morality set. One that is in opposition to the one that current society holds to be the 'norm'. Norm quickly translates to being 'right' in a group dynamic. So they are viewed as 'other'', 'different', and 'wrong' in the group-think context.
So your question would be better phrased: "What causes abberational moral development in a society".
And the answer to that is a very very big one, ranging from statistical distribution of behavior based on genetics (it could be that a certain percentage of people are genetically predisposed to moral variance as a survival of the species evolutionary isue), to cultural conflicts based on upbringing (conflict in mixing cultures leads to a moral disunion in develoment and the two or more cultural modes 'battle' and result in an odd mix), to nurture issues that might cause alteration of the moral development model (The parents frig the kid up).

I know a lot of times it is simply an inferority complex.
They (usually being socially lacking) feel that no one really cares about them. And so they will have to find other ways to make themselves happy.
Some, kill for the fame they get out of it.
Others, kill for the thrill... they love it
Others, get off on the kill... it's sexual
And yet others, are angry and better at the world.
And I am sure there are many other reasons!!!

Like I said above.
It is an inferiority complex. They feel that no one loves them. They feel that they have to do something to attract attention to themselves. In their minds, attention and love are quite similar.
So to answer your question.
1. People who weren't loved or given attention as children.
2. People who tortured animals as children.
3. Quiet, shy, and intreverted people (socially lacking)

I think that is partly due to the fact that serial killers simply are more fascinating. I mean drug related murders are obvious. Some crack fiend needed his/her fix and decided to kill for it, etc. Or a man caught his wife in bed with another man so he shot them both. Or being blackmailed a man shoots his blackmailer to save money. Or a wife kills her husband to collect their insurance money. But a serial killer isn't tracked that way. They have NO REAL motive. It's a saga of unfolding twists and turns that don't really hold to pattern, yet they do very much so. It's difficult to deal with!

I know I know it's an old thread but, I think more can be added to the topic. I notice alot of serial killers have a penchant for killing prostitutes.

there isnt one thing you can pinpoint its not a disease there is no way you can predict or stop someone from becoming one
could be the following
mental illness- im talking like a mental retardation,schizophrenia something along those line, these people tend to be unstable and are capiable of anything
the parents not disciplining the child or showing love, they dont learn right from wrong depending on how bad the situation is
someone could have a bad day/week/month and just snap
lack of emotion, some people are just cold and caluse and do it for the fame or just for the thrill

Serial Killers have 3 I guess u could say signs to look for. I had a teacher in HS tell me this:
1. Obsession with fire
2. Cruelty to Animals
3. Cronic bed wetters
The 3rd one really through me through a loop, I wonder if its just the thril of the kill or something else.

The sad reason behind that is that they make themselves available and are also counted as being on the lower ranks of society so no one but their own famlies miss them or even care that they are gone. And some psychopaths believe they are doing "society" a favor by eliminating them. It's a sad world we live in.
