One of my cousins (who lives with his wife in Manhattan) got a bunny for a pet once their children were grown and moved away. They praised the bunny as a fine pet with one exception: It could not be trained to use a liter box or only defecate on newspapers left on the floor.

They kept the bunny indoors at all times. With all the dogs in their neighborhood, it would surely have been fatal to let it run outside. The bunny did run quite a lot in circles around their living room / dining room area, so it got enough exercise.
