Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a great ride, I really enjoyed this revamp of "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes". Some people have referred to is as an amalgamation of both "Escape from" and "Conquest of" but I don't agree simply because the only thing it has in common with Escape is Caesar's birth, other then that... nothing. I am a bit conflicted about the CGI in this film though. Don't get me wrong, anyone who has seen the trailers know's that the apes look amazing, but there is something to be said for the tremendous job done by John Chambers (and any staff that helped him), after all the Oscars gave the man an honorary award for it.

I've enjoyed all the ape movies, even the Tim Burton's (at least until the end). The one thing I wish they had done was tell the story of what happened between 2670 AD (when the teacher is talking in "Battle for the..." and 3978 AD (when George Taylor and his crew return to earth) as a 6th film. It would have been interesting to see if Ape Domination would have still happened because of one of Caesar's ancestors, and how the true history was lost over time. I would imagine one of Caesar's ancestors being assassinated with out heir, and a human being set up for it. With no successor to take over the orangutans end up forming a senate, without anybody discovering it was them with the help of the Gorillas who arrainge for the proper heir's death. The human's, of course, are driven out of Ape City, and over the next 1,000 years turn into the savage beings Col. Taylor and company will discover when they return.

Wow... is it possible to high jack you own thread, cause I think I just did. Anyway, I enjoyed the movie, and recommend it to any and all fan's of Sci-Fi. I really believe Planet of the Ape fan's will find that the film, though different, respects the originals, even though the Origin is revamped.

This movie was......CRAP!!!

THE BIGGEST JUSSSST KIDDING EVER!!!!

This movie was jaw droppingly fantastic, and if you "don't know what to do tonight...." GO SEE IT.

It's like the Citizen Kane of ape movies.

This movie really, REALLY didn't need to be this good.

It's so much more entertaining than Tim Burton's movie, 100% satisfying as a movie, as an ape movie, as a prequel......

It's a fantastic psychological study, in human, apes, becoming leader, ......why the apes didn't just slaughter all the humans in the future!
(I always wondered that, why were the humans treated....like apes! and not just all shot to death?)

SPOILER AREA SPOILER AREA*******************************************

That's one of the hundreds of things that made it great. Brian Cox isn't just a dickhead, he is what you'd expect at a place like the ape sanctuary.
He's not evil, he's just a guy doing his job, and his son, played by Malfoy from Harry Potter! is what you'd expect from a little asshole son!

The most evil person is the neighbor, him being a pilot is great because he will obviously spread the virus that created the intelligence of the apes all across the world.
(If you stuck around for the final scene....)

This really was the most satisfying movie of the summer for me, followed by X-Men First Class, Captain America (until the end)....Insidious.....

My theory for a sequel would be the virus spreads throughout the world, killing billions....(but why are there humans in the future?)
With every virus/disease, some humans develop an immunity. That's why Taylor from the first movie didn't immediatly die - the virus was long dead by then.

The survivors survive, but with damaged vocal cords, so can't speak. As the apes use the virus on more monkey's/or the human's spread it to them naturally, they slowly take over the world naturally as the humans die off/become weaker.

What a great, great movie.

And there was no "fan wank/fan service," things happening JUST BECAUSE IT HAS TO. ie: Sinestro putting on the yellow ring for no reason, Wolverine being shot in the head...because in the comic he lost his memory, so.... Striker not being killed after all he did....because we need him for X-men 2!!

Nothing from this movie has anything to do with the original 5. In the original movies Caesar is the son of Zera and Cornelius, who were from the year 3978, and had traveled back through time in either Col Taylor or John Brent's (James Franciscus) ship (makes more sense if it's Brent's imo). With this movie they are re-inventing the franchise, while still paying respect to the original concept (unlike Abram's Star Trek, Bay's Transformers, or Kelly's attempted Wonder Woman series.). I think it is possible that this virus could be like the on from the T.V. series Jeremiah, where anybody over the age of "innocents" (aka puberty) dies, and the younger generation has nobody to pass on Technology to them, combine that with your idea about the weakening of Vocal Cords and I think that should cover human's gradually living like cave dwellers of prehistoric times.

The gas idea is good, but I think it is more likely that the talking apes with simply mate with the savage ones and make babies that can talk.

Nothing in this film "Had to happen", because it is a revamp of the franchise. However it is obvious that unlike some film makers, these folks had respect for what was, and obviously took inspiration from the original films. They definitely opened the door for sequels, with the "Mission to Mars" and referring to them as "Lost in Space" on the front page of the news paper. However this doesn't mean the any of the Astronauts coming back have to be Col. Taylor. If it turned out to be Capt. Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg), I could care less as long as the next film advances the story. Marky-Mark has matured as an actor since Burton's film. Let's face it there will never be another Spencer Tracy, so why not give Wahlberg (& Davidson) another chance. I'd like it to be Taylor followed by Brent in a third film, but their is no law saying it has to be that way this time around.

The important question is, will there be a Nova, and who will play her.

I was very skeptical when I first saw the previews, but I have to say it's one of the better movies I've seen this year.

this movie was TOO....DAMN....AWESOME

I highly recommend it...better than I thought it would be

Drew & I saw it the other night...only because we got to do so for free. We weren't sure after seeing the previews. But, it was well worth our time. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will likely get it on dvd for our collection. I'm actually anxious for the sequel.

That's the only reason I saw it too!

I kind of liked it, but that probably had to do with not paying money to get in, and also because my expectations were rock-bottom abysmal. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

I must say though, the special effects weren't as great as everyone's saying. I don't know how you guys judge visuals, but if CGI is obvious, I consider it bad by definition. Good special effects don't take you out of the movie; these did. I couldn't shake the impression that I was watching a cartoon for the first half of the film. After that my brain adjusted, but the damage was done.

The thing that impressed me most, surprisingly enough, was the script. It seems like a group of intelligent people got together and tried to figure out how an ape apocalypse could actually happen in real life. This was always my biggest problem with the Planet of the Apes franchise; there was simply no realisitic way this could ever have happened on earth, and it always bugged me. It's as realistic as the premise of that dragon movie with Christian Bale and Mattew McConoughey (the name of which I have thankfully forgotten). The 'earth all along' twist works as just that: a mindfuck to close out a goofy movie. If you're going to carry on with the story somehow, you need to answer a few basic questions (and you have to do a better job than the original franchise...time travelling apes my aching ass). Fortunately, this movie did. There are still some holes (like why we lose the power of speech, or why an intelligence boosting serum you inject becomes an airborne virus all of a sudden; does Hollywood think that everything that comes out of a laboratory is a virus?), but for the most part I can see the effort the writers put in not making their movie retarded. Bravo.

Other than that... I appreciated the homages. The "damn dirty ape" moment in particular was pretty awesome. I appreciated the leading lady's legs. I appreciated how the apes magically have the ability to swell in numbers from a couple dozen to literally hundreds when running cross-country. That sure goes a long way to explaining how they were able to conquer the earth; turn your back for a second and there's suddenly thousands more. Where the fuck did they all come from? Too late! Apeslap!

And don't hold out for sequels. This would not work as a reboot of the franchise. Why? Because the ending is a foregone conclusion. (It's right there in the title: Planet of the Apes. It's theirs. We lose in the end. They blew it up, the maniacs.) This film told a particular story, and it left off at the exact right moment for our imaginations to fill in the blanks. We get it. This is how they conquered the planet. There is no remaining story worth picking up. Sometimes it's okay to leave well enough alone, and this is one of those times. It's frankly etraordinary they managed to pull off "well enough" in the first place; let's not tempt the gods, huh?

Screw the zombie apocalypse, I'm hoping for a simian uprising!!!

Special Effects always take me out of the film, because normally they are being used in abundance to cover-up bad acting, plot holes, or in Bays' case, no story at all. The idea of a time loop that would lead to the apes being able to talk in the original films isn't that out of whack, look at the Terminator franchise (at least 1 and 2), the computer that takes over the world came into existence because of the original terminator coming back through time to kill Sarah Connor, then the hand was found in the factory and it's chip was used to build the computer that would send the terminator back to kill Sarah Connor, then the hand was found in the factory and it's chip was... wow, I am getting dizzy from that one.

Anyway, orgianly the origins of the "Talking Apes" was a Simian named Aldo (who was a Gorilla in "Battle For the Planet of the Apes), and not Caesar. Zera and Cornelius coming back through time actually changed everything. It actually isn't hard to imagine that originally something like what happened in this film could have happened in the original "Unwritten" history of the Ape uprising. They try to make their slaves more proficiency by boosting their intelligence with chemicals, but instead find themselves overthrown. Because Caesar was raised by Armando (Noonien Singh) he knew the goodness some people are capable off and thus ended the uprising with the liberation of his people, and then made peace with the humans. "Aldo" on the other hand would have only seen the brutality of human beings, and as such had no remorse about slaughtering ever man woman and child who arms weren't as longer then their legs.

You are wrong about 1 thing full out, their is still the matter of the the "Mission to Mars" that ended up lost in space (did you pick up on the cover of the news paper?). The entire reason for that was to open the door for a 2nd film. The Astronauts on the Mars Mission will return to earth and discover that is has been taken over by the apes, it could be called "Return to a Planet of Apes". If their is a 3rd (Beneath the Planet of the Apes) it would tell of the survivors who live in the under ground tunnels of the "forbidden city", maybe "Survivors of the Planet of the Apes" or something like that. As long as the story is well writen, and the acting is at least Decent, I would like to see a trilogy made out of this... just please don't cast Megan Fox as Nova, her penis will ruin everything.

I watched this movie and enjoyed it immensely. There are some aspects of the movie which made me love it. Like the one, at the end as the credits rolled they showed David Hewlett on his way to work. I will not say what his profession is, as to not spoil what is the greatest lead in to what must be the next movie’s premises as to how the Apes came to rule the planet Earth. Love to watch it again..

^ This. Haven't seen the movie because it looks like a CGI nightmare. I am happy to hear at least the script was well received. But from following the trailers, I too was wondering how one goes from leading a troop of experimental apes (heck, maybe even a few flunkies from the zoo) to an all-out Ape Spring of multitudes conquering 300 Million Americans with weapons; to say nothing of 6 Billion humans worldwide, also with big nasty weapons? At least the original narrative attempted to explain that apes were bred for many years and kept as pets after a plague killed off cats and dogs (yeah... my dog and cat died so a large gorilla comes to mind as a replacement pet, forgo the rabbit and ferret, thanks). And they soon became the chic servants du jour for the well to do (and you'd have to be, to keep a full grown primate stocked with bananas). But at the very least this was an attempt to explain why the world had a great ape seemingly under every armpit. Of course, that original Conquest film was also a cheap attempt to capitalize on the social unrest (riots) that had plagued the country many years before; playing on peoples fears to make a buck. Sad motivation. Everyone in Hollywood thinks they are deep, social commentators. Hollywood: Its where all the really smart people live.

Saw it in 4D, the gears in the seats made me feel like the apes were kicking MY ass!
