So I'm posting this publicly because I'm that pissed about it.

I have had about 11 jobs in my life, not including my current one. All of those jobs were walked out on by me. Some because I hated them, others because I hated the people, and even more so, I just didn't want to work and got the fucking job because I was bored.

So now my current job, delivering for Domino's. Right. I've been here for about 5 months now. I took the initiative in finding it myself, getting hired by myself, and keeping it. But now, I feel like I'm getting fucked.

I have open availability since I'm not in any actual school. I specifically requested to work part time... that is... 8-15 hours, though I said I can work 25-30. That worked out for a while, but now a lot of people have either quit, got fired, or are now magically part time, also.

So, I've been promoted to full time. But not in the sense that you may think. Drivers can never get a raise, or to my knowledge, benefits. But the kicker? I was working 10:30-7 one day, and my manager casually told me he changed my schedule. This week, in total, I will be working about 40+ hours.

I was not given a choice in this. When I asked to discuss it the first time, I basically got laughed at. Second time, he told me if I don't like it I can quit.

Taking my job history into consideration, I am trying to do the right thing (for once) and stay, hoping that it will get better. But at the same time, I feel like I am backing down to do the "right" thing, giving off the impression that this can happen anytime and he can do this whenever he wants.

Have I grown a sense of responsibility? Or am I just tucking my tail between my legs because I know it's expected of me?

You are acting on a sense of responsibility, and the desire to do the right thing by the job and yourself. This is a god thing.

The bad thing is that you are getting tooled by your boss. If you can't get a clear answer as to when your hours will at least decrease to under 40 hours a week, then there is a real problem.

You have few options. But if you have to use your own car for deliveries it can always have 'car problems' on any given day. You also can get ill, and need some sick time at any point. You can telegraph a message to your boss that 'you feel like something is wrong with your car that might take it out of commission for a few days, or that you feel a flu coming on that might keep you out for a few days.

He won't fire you as then you can collect unemployment, and he wants you to quit. He also my be in a position that he NEEDS you, and your leaving could bork him up but good, and he can't fire you, and told you to quit if you were unhappy as a bluff, full knowing you wouldn't.

Myriads

I agree with Myriads. Don't quit.

Also, I don't know how the job market is around the rest of the country, but I recently just found the first local job that I have seen in 6 fucking months in my town today. I am of the opinion that any job is better than no job right now.

If the job market is okay in your neck of the woods, then I would just hang in there, force a smile on your face, and if he fires you, then just happily collect unemployment while you browse through the job listings.

I agree with the above posters, and I think you could always keep looking for other employment opportunities. Then you can just quit - and walk into something better.

Yeah, the days of "Take this Job and Shove It" haven been replaced by "I wish I had a job to shove", big time. I am still looking for work in my field, but will probably find two words that rhyme with "orange" first. Your boss is of course riding you because of the economy. When things will turn around is still anyone's guess. Good advice above to keep the crummy job while looking elsewhere. Good luck to you!

I almost ended up walking out today because one person called off... get this... because of a fucking CONCERT.

So who covered his shift? Somebody that wasn't supposed to be there, as in, had the day off. I was VERY vocal and everybody in the store noted how pissed I was.

I turned the day around in an hour and just made the best of it. Yay for responsibility. I'm a champ.

I can't just take sick days, he WOULD fire me. I'd rather just walk out then be fired because of a bluff. If I'm going to stick with it, I might as well do it right. So, let the fun begin again tomorrow. 6-1. Woo!

I've been working in the tire industry for the last six months. I've had a number of summer jobs as well, and this is the first time I've held a job this long, as I've always been able to find a job. But I went to a few sources at one point (job coaches) last year when I had a dry spell finding work. Their opinion? I had too many positions, for too short a length of time.

I'm working 50 hours in a typical week. I take it because I can, but mostly because I know it'll help more than just arguing. My opinion? Don't overthink it. Really, what are you doing thats keeping you so busy on the other end of all this?

I hate to say it...but welcome to the real world.

With this shitty economy, ...oh the IRONY of the Democrats being in charge and "sticking it to the 'Big man' while 'helping' the little man....THE BOSSES, especially the asshole bosses, now have ALL the power!

A few years back, when employers were desperate for help, employees were getting benefits and the bosses were trying to accomodate them.
Now.....HA!!! ha ha HA! Wherever you work, unless you have a kind, Christian boss, or just kind boss, forget it. You'll be doing the work of three people, no time off, no possibility of a raise. They can abuse us, because they know they have the power.

I have an assistant manager that's always dropping snide hints that he can hire kids to take the older worker's places. Yes, he's an asshole, yes, he's going to hell.....but he's got the power. Who's going to hire a 60 year old lady who's tired?

Most jobs are part time, and the reason is part time workers don't get benefits - no insurance, over-time pay, annual leave, etc. At WalMart, they used to work us 39 and a half hours a week.....and then grab us and tell us clock out "RIGHT NOW!" So they wouldn't have to pay any over-time. (And sometimes, when they were evil, they'd make you go BACK to "finish" your work or be fired. Until they got sued in a class action lawsuit. (pssst, and after that, they STILL did it!)

This is why it's so importnat to get your life in order, as hard as that is in this economy, pay off every debt you have, and have a little savings.

The last job I had, I worked 60+ hours a week, six days a week, AND I wasn't paid hourly... it sucked absolute donkey balls, but at the time I needed the money. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

If you don't need the money, fucking quit; the working man's a sucker!

If you need the money, suck it up or get a better job... not too many other options available to you, methinks.

One thing about Diomino's is the turnover of managers and drivers is high. Tough it out and chances are your manager won't be manager forever.

Ans no matter what they say, NEVER switch from driving to working inside. Work as much as you can and hold on to all that tip money. I would have been a millionaire if I saved mine.
