Metallica is popular because they got radio play and air time

Iron Maiden didnt get any of that and the album The Number of The Beast went platiunm without radio play or air time

they got that way because the music was just that good

I have to go with my old friends james and lars. I'm sure they wouldn't care who I went for, they're old farts like me now.
Damn ! I can't believe this is a Classic Rock poll. What happened ?
It seems like just yesterday we were the cutting edge, Old bridge militia, Megaforce Records rockers and now we're .....Classic Rock ? You People are killing me !!!

Let me interject into this grudge match here.

First of all, this argument doesn't even make sense. Every metalhead on earth felt betrayed when LOAD came out...and has been feeling betrayed by them since. Every album that they release is promoted as "The old Metallica is back"...let's see now...we've been through ReLOAD, Muzak Metallica, St. Anger, etc. etc. Since the release of the black album, we've witnessed the band cutting their hair off (and subsequently being made fun of by Alice In Chains), piercing their nipples, playing Bob Seager Songs, having to watch Kirk Hammitt cry his little eyes out on stage with Santana, being made fun of by South Park because Lars wouldn't shut up about Napster, watching them cry to their therapists about their feelings, forget how to play their instruments, ...and basically just exist purely on their name alone.

What has Iron Maiden done since the time of the Black album? They've done world tours pretty much every other year. They've both lost and found Bruce...and continued to put out top notch material on EVERY album regardless if was Bruce or Blaze. They've release several New Live DVD's of sold out performances all over the world. ...just basically wrote music, toured and kicked ass.

They are, without dispute (see, this is not a point you can rationally argue) the biggest metal band in the entire world and have been since 1982 when Number of the Beast came out. They achieved this with NO radio play, NO selling out, NO compromising their integrity, and a bare minimum of bullshit.

Doesn't matter, guy. Metallica had up's and down's..sure. But they've got loyalty as a basis. They've taken many daring steps in their career. And still are. And I'm sorry.. But IronMaiden has been on the radio plenty o' times..at least on this end over here. So putting that much of a statement into the argument doesn't hold a lot of weight, my friend.

Metallica was in high demand for radio play, and otherwise. The fan's requested..they gave. Yeah, Lar's fucked up. We get that. He gets that. Moving on. St. Anger?

What a fucking disaster. Read the latest Rollingstone.com interview with James, he even admits what a torture-fest that was.

Some Kind of Monster? Yeah. Another fail. Again, We understand that they got their shit fucked up.

BUT due to the amount of good that they put INTO the world of Metal..they are ALLOWED to fuck up a bit.

Dog on 'em all ya want.. but regardless of pretty awards..it's all about the music, man. And yeah, Maiden had some good 'boppers'..but Metallica's lyrics had fuckin' depth, man. Jame's wrote about stuff that no one in that time could touch.

I would in no way consider myself a "headbanger" or a "metalhead" , so I'm not sure how much my opinion counts in this thread , but ...

I'll have to go w/Metallica on this one ... even though Iron Maiden had those cool-ass album covers & posters.

By the way ... whoever made the decision to make this , :mhorns: , a permanent emoticon is a friggin' genius. :bowing:

Throw up the goats! :mhorns:

You get Maiden played on the radio?! Shit...do I live in the wrong fucking city or what...

Anyway, I do agree that James has written some great lyrics.
