Metallica hands down. Despite their crappy period from the late 90's til now, they still have all of their early, and that is more than enough. Iron Maiden is good, but Metallica just has a certain anger that comes through in their music (their early music at least) and grants them sense of authority.

Let me interject into this grudge match here.

First of all, this argument doesn't even make sense. Every metalhead on earth felt betrayed when LOAD came out...and has been feeling betrayed by them since. Every album that they release is promoted as "The old Metallica is back"...let's see now...we've been through ReLOAD, Muzak Metallica, St. Anger, etc. etc. Since the release of the black album, we've witnessed the band cutting their hair off (and subsequently being made fun of by Alice In Chains), piercing their nipples, playing Bob Seager Songs, having to watch Kirk Hammitt cry his little eyes out on stage with Santana, being made fun of by South Park because Lars wouldn't shut up about Napster, watching them cry to their therapists about their feelings, forget how to play their instruments, ...and basically just exist purely on their name alone.

What has Iron Maiden done since the time of the Black album? They've done world tours pretty much every other year. They've both lost and found Bruce...and continued to put out top notch material on EVERY album regardless if was Bruce or Blaze. They've release several New Live DVD's of sold out performances all over the world. ...just basically wrote music, toured and kicked ass.

They are, without dispute (see, this is not a point you can rationally argue) the biggest metal band in the entire world and have been since 1982 when Number of the Beast came out. They achieved this with NO radio play, NO selling out, NO compromising their integrity, and a bare minimum of bullshit.

X factor was the equivalent of load for maiden and Maiden learned\continued to rule after that

Alchemy raised a good point, and that's why both of these metal bands made this list. He was talking about Maiden, but you could apply it to both bands. No hit singles, little radio airplay, doing things thier way....same thing that made me a Rush fan. And, unlike AC/DC, didn't make a 35 year career out of the same four chords.

I really like both bands. Iron Maiden has been a big thing in my life....as a young bassist, I was influenced heavily by Steve Harris (who in turn was influenced by Geddy Lee, as was Cliff Burton now that I think of it.....anyways....) and Maiden's epics got to me at a time when I was all about prog, prog-metal and epic musical meanderings and concept albums.

In the end, it was Metallica for me because of how they completely changed the face of what was accesible with a musical genre that was previously mostly underground. Maiden took an already accepted style and built upon it, perfecting it. Metallica ripped a genre from the depths of Hell and dragged it to the surface kicking and screaming and OWNED it, bringing to folks who weren't even listening to thrash.

I agree with many of your observations, but take this into consideration, I was there in the middle of the metal revolution.
My associates and I changed the music world. Sure I liked Maiden as much as anyone else, but compairing Maiden to Metallica is foolish.
They are both excellent bands but only one movement still lives on today
If Jon Z didn't take the chance to sign a little known band out of San Fransisco and many others ( I won't say who ) the landscape of music would look totally different. Maiden a great band, but the world could go on without them.

I was almost gonna vote Metallica when "Hero of the Day" popped in my mind today. That song was awesome. But I gotta go with Iron Maiden. Just the way Bruce Dickerson tears into a song like "The Trooper".

And what's this crap about Kirk Hammett crying on stage with Santana? I'll bet Iron Maiden wouldn't cry onstage with Santana. What am I saying.....Iron Maiden wouldn't be onstage with Santana.

(No disrespest to Santana, I picked a copy of "Abraxas" a few weeks back and I'm really into it)
