Myriads, I think the titles work fine, but since you asked...

How about one not based on the number of contributions, but the, I don't know, quality? Helpfulness? Information sharing-ness?

MY thoughts exactly.
For instance......that thread of "One word..." responses. People gained levels just by posting ONE word. That really is not fair. There are others who have gained over a thousand posts in a week or so. How the hell was that achieved? The titles given to the member by the sheer number of posts does not hold much meaning and in some cases is rather silly. Like Dave said, it should be based on quality and Helpfulness to the community NOT the number of posts themselves.

Just show a post count and do away with the levels?
The only problem I have with the levels is that people think you just post to get "levels" that really mean nothing, but by just having all read tmf member or something theres nothing to "compete" for.

But how to implement it? The forum software isn't sophisticated enough to introduce a tread grading system, and even if it was, it's be even more time consuming. Hell, Myriads would be spending nearly a whole tenth of the time here that Milagros does. 😀

What a fabulous idea. I've thought the levels were an annoying waste anyway, and this is why. You're rewarding the lifeless with titles for cluttering up the place. Get rid of them. This is a fine suggestion.

On a more serious note, the titles stopped meaning anything to me some time ago. Probably about the time I got taken over as the TMF's top poster actually. 😀

I tend now to find it more satisfying to go after the more "intangible" prize of being well known. I guess I managed that pretty well, three month LOA's notwithstanding. 😉

You know, a post is a post. Maybe a good idea is that if a post is more helpful to the community, they can count it as more than one. I see what you are saying, Dave2112. I think a post that is more insightful or helpful should not have the same value as someone who posts one word or a smiley face

Just to clarify something...

The post I made that is currently being discussed was made by me almost two years ago before I was a Mod. This thread is an old one that's been bumped up.

My post reflected what I felt at the time, but having seen things from the inside, I have a different view of things. There's just no way to award levels based on abstract concepts. I mean, sociologically, we could...it's just a matter of electronics. It ain't set up that way.

Besides, it's been so long since levels meant anything that the idea's not a really important one to me anymore.

To those of you upset about people racking up levels with fluff posts, don't worry about it. For some, it's fun, no big. If you're someone with low posts but always has something worthwhile to say, the folks of the community know who you are.

Most of the people I've met from here are those with low post totals but high content value. Well, except Milagros, but he's a bit off anyway...😀 (And a cool guy to hang out with, to boot!)

You can award levels based on quality if you desire actually. its been done before.
I think a kuro5hin.org style method would work best for this site, assuming you guys were crazy enough to implement it.
