Tragedy Strikes Close to Home

On Monday, two of my close friends, a young couple with a 3-year-old girl, lost everything they own to a dangerous ice-packed flash flood. They live by the river and a freak set of meteorological circumstances happened that broke it up and sent water and enormous blocks of ice slamming into thier house. They had to break out windows to escape, as the water and ice kept the doors from opening. It was a close call that could have been even more tragic. The foundation of the house itself came close to letting loose, which would have been disatrous.

Both cars were lost, completely submerged, and nothing escaped. My friend lost her father a short while ago, and all of her pictures and mementos are gone. These are really good kids who were just starting to get thier lives going in the right, succesful direction.

The killer is that homeowner's insurance does not cover floods, nor does standard auto insurance. Most people are not aware of this until something bad happens. Check your policy, those of you who own homes, and make sure you are covered if you live in a flood-potential area.

If there are any of you feeling philanthropic, you can contact me at my e-mail addy [email protected] for details on how you might help. I have my old car still sitting in my driveway, which I'm going to donate. I know what it's like to be without one.

I know this is the Internet and scams are abundant. Those of you who know me, know this is not a possiblility for me. For those of you who don't, I'm NOT looking for cash donations here, to avoid any uncertainty. (I certainly wouldn't stop anyone from helping, but I'm not asking for that.) If you wish to donate clothing or such, I can be reached at the above addy for sizes and the like.

Thanks for your time,
Dave

I'm sorry to hear about your friends, Dave. That's scarey! They'll be in prayer. I'm glad they at least got out safely themselves. Is there any chance of posting a list of some specific things they may be in need of? That may help things along some. I'm assuming the Red Cross or someone is providing temporary shelter? Is there a specific fund set up for them yet? Or is it still up to you at this point since it's so recent?

So true Dave...
If anyone lives near an area that has a CHANCE of flooding you have to add flood insurance!!!
It must be added seperately but usually only adds bit to the overall cost of the insurance!

I hope they can get federal assistance?!

My prayers are with them!

This is indeed a horrible disaster, and I just emailed Dave myself, to offer our assistance. I know what a large network of warm, caring people we have here on the forum, and I am sure with some of our help, we can make this tragedy at least a little easier for them.

I just wanted to post quick, to vouch for Dave's character and honesty. I know there are many of you who do not know him personally, and have no way of knowing if he is legit or not, but there are several of us who have met Dave in real life, and I know all of us can easily and comfortably say he is a straight forward, honest, good hearted fellow. So please do not let trust be an issue in deciding whether to help or not. I encourage all of you who CAN help, to please do so. You never know when the day may come when we may find ourselves in similar circumstances. It's nice to know there are people out there who care enough to help in whatever way they can, in case we should ever find ourselves struck by such a tragedy.

That sucks!! That really, really sucks!!! I will take a look around to see if I have anything they may need. I know we have alot of stuff laying around our house which we really don't use and I would be very happy to see alot of it go. I would be even happier if I know that it's going to somebody who can really use it.

My thoughts and prayers are definitely with them.

I've Had My Differences With Dave

But I've never once doubted his honesty, integrity or character.

Hello Dave.

I was very sorry to hear about this. I am working through my own "things" right now, but I'll see what I can do with a little financial figuring. There is too much tradgedy going on and I want to see what I can do to change it.

Dave, the link in your post doesn't work.
I want to help.
E-mail me at monsterb 'at' adelphia.net with an address and who to make the the check out to. Thanks.

Dave, I have tired your link as well but it only takes me to an AOL page requiring a password. Email me at [email protected] to let me know how to contribute. Thanks.

I'll check on the bad link, it should just be my e-mail addy. ([email protected]) If the link doesn't work, just type the addy into your addy heading.

Ok, update. Everyone involved is fine, physically at least. There may be some relief available from FEMA, as they do a bit of work around here, considering the flood-prone area. They were a godsend during the Ice Storm of '98. My friends are getting some help from her parents and at least have a temporary roof.

Clothing is an important thing, especially for the daughter, who is a size 4. I will update on the parent's sizes as I'll be talking to them later today about my old car.

Since I am on a limited amount of time for online activities with my current schedule, here's how I'll do this, to save time. Everyone who is interested can e-mail me OR leave me a PM if for some reason that doesn't work. I will return your message with an adress to send anything you may wish to.

As far as money goes, I have been since counseled to limit my online drive to donations of clothing/children's toys, etc. With the new tax laws in my state, taking money through the mail/internet is a bit sticky, and it's also the wish of my friends, as they are getting the money situation figured out.

I would like to express my deep thanks to those interested in helping. With all of our occasional differences, this is a close community of decent human beings. None of the BS matters when people's welfare is at stake. If only the world at large could be more like that. Even if you can't physically help out, please keep these folks in your prayers, as it does help immensly, I believe.

Thank you again,
Dave

I wonder if there is a way of going to a major national store like Kids R Us, Target, Sears, Walmart... And placing money into an account which the parents can claim from that store in the form of a gift card.

Just a thought.

Dave, let us know the size of the parents to, I have already sent you an E-Mail for the address to ship it to..

Thanks
Judy

how awful!

Hey Dave~

Add my name to JPie's...We certainly can part with some of our clothes 'round here and I'll work on a friend at Baby Gap to see if anything can be done--(you already know how to reach me.) I hope all works out for your dear friends...

XOXO
