ok latest count has over three thousand dead in pakistan from a major earthquake including a school house that collapsed on children. whats going on here? so many natural disasters lately taking so many lives. wasnt that tsunami just last year? its so tragic but unfortunately unavoidable i suppose. especially earthquakes. of all the natural disasters i would fear that the most, because it seems to me no where to run or hide. the earth could open at your feet and boom down you go. unlike a tornado or hurricane where there does seem at least if given enough time, a time to run from the occurence. and of course tsunamis are caused by earthquakes either on the ocean floor, or somewhere near the ocean.

Having lived in Southern California all my life I know all about earthquakes. How safe you are depends on many factors, but if you can hide under something strong (like a desk or table, or under a doorway) and the structure you're in can withstand the shaking, you'll probably be all right. Unfortunately, the people in these countries are relatively poor so the buildings they live in simply collapse, and they die by the thousands (not saying it couldn't happen here but it would have to be a HUGE quake centered in the L.A. area). It's tragic when this many are killed but we can't predict where or when earthquakes will strike, so all we can do is help when they do (donations come to mind) and build better buildings, but again these people are poor so it's a tough situation. 🙁

Yet another major natural disaster 🙁 It is indeed very tragic :sadcry:

This seems to be the year for these things. The tsunami, the gulf hurricanes quakes and slides elsewhere and now this one. I always hope that the people didn't have to suffer much before they died. Another case where everyone should jump on board and help as they're able.

busy has pledged fifty million dollars to the relief effort. i hear the authorities are giving up the rescue efforts. and saturday was a school day in pakistan, the children had just sat down for the beginning of school. all those children buried under the rubble. so sad.

Perhaps we are indeed in the Last Days....

But another theory is that these events go in cycles and since we're technologically at a stage where nothing of this magnitude goes without notice we *hear* about every disaster. As little (geologically speaking) as a hundred years ago we might not have heard anything about this catastrophe until many months after the event, if at all.

Regardless...still a tragedy.

Q

five million homeless i just heard on cnn where on earth are they supposed to live?? its so sad why do these things happen to countries that are already rather poor?

Okay first off everyone no I didnt have a bad weekend and I dont like tragedy of any sense and the scope of this is tremendous. My thoughts are with those that lost their lives, loves ones and property.
Now on a non-sentimental note, issy try not to be so upset. I dont mean to sound like a monster (although I will and will probally get hit over the head for this post) but these things just happen. The earth does go through cycles and like someone said before we find out about them faster and more often now because of the digital age we live in where anywhere in the world can be on live in 5 minutes.
As unfortunate as this and all these events were/are this is the earth's own way of population control. This planet is a lot stronger and more resiliant than anyone thinks. This planet was here LONG before humans and Id wager that It will be here a lot longer than humans. Without events such as these the Earth would be so overpopulated the food crisis in the 3rd world as well as living conditions would be worse than they are now.
Hundreds of years ago when disasters like Pompei and huge monsoons in China occured they killed tens of thousands on a regular basis. And everyone still regrouped and went on with their lives.
Again Im not saying this to be mean-spirited or to make light of such a tragedy. I was just concerned that you issy were maybe getting a little more upset than you should and I was hoping to show you that feeling bad for them is okay, but dont let it completely ruin your day or make you afraid.
Later all....
and before you all beat me over the head for being insensitive let me put on my Hard-Hat. Thanks
Rob

lol robace i'm not that upset it just seems sad to me. and i wont beat you over the head and it isnt ruining my day. but it does seem rather selfish of me to be thinking and getting excited about my upcoming vacation when so many are and will be homeless and suffering. i care for people thats all and hate to see innocent children especially getting killed.

It seems wierd for the tsunami and this earthquake to happen so close together.

I'm not an expert, but wasn't the tsunami caused by an underwater earthquake? and don't eathquakes tend to happen around faults, so there are certain more likely to experience earthquakes? If this is so, it doesn't seem weird that two earthquakes were in relitivly similar areas.

jim yes tsunamis are caused by earthquakes which happen either near the ocean or on the ocean floor. some earthquakes have been thousand of miles from shore, but causes such a ripple in the ocean that it eventually creates the giant wave that becomes a tsunami. hope i have that right, anyone feel free to correct me
