So, C) was the lie. The fourth grandparent, my paternal grandfather, was actually born in 1887.

Sorry, B) is true. Bernard was in the same army platoon as my father in World War II. Because Bernard was an orphan, when they were granted one week's leave including Thanksgiving Day, my father invited Bernard to come home with him for the holiday. To make a long story short, Bernard met both of my father's sisters, fell in love with one of them, and they were married in 1945. They had two children, five grandchildren, and I've lost count of the great-grandchildren.
