A) I once got a speeding ticket on I-95 for going 76mph in a 55mph zone.

B) I once got a speeding ticket on a local street for going 41mph in a 25mph zone.

C) I once got a moving violation in Chicago for changing lanes without signaling.

A) is true. That was in 1973 and the fine was $63, three dollars for each mile over the limit. I was living on a $300 per month fellowship in graduate school at the time, so the fine hurt.

C) is true. That was in 1977. Chicago cops had a quota of tickets for moving violations to give out then, and this cop was apparently behind in his pace for the quota.

B) was the lie. That never happened.

No. C is true. I went when I was in the 8th grade on our class field trip. It was a very memorable trip for many reasons and one of them was it was the first time I went away without my parents.
