US probe lands safely on Mars.....

Chicken shit...........

....I am not at all impressed. Any fool can get a mars probe to land and work safely with that kind of money. Just you wait till the mighty BEAGLE starts yapping and pissing up the nearest martian boulder, THEN we will see who are the smug gits! dont go listening to all this crap about it landing in a crater and not transmitting. Just you wait and see what can be done with a dustbin lid, some sticky backed plastic and two HP7 batteries.

Ok, so today was the last chance to make contact, and nothing happened, but thats just a minor setback, anytime now its going to burst in to life belting out chart hits from "girls aloud" and "Boyzone" then we will see who is laughing, Mr smarty pants NASA guy,s.

Just you wait and see you smart assed Americans, the BEAGLE will be victorious!!!

THIS IS A JOKE, REPEAT, A JOKE. ITS CALLED SELF DEPRECATION. I AM MAKING FUN OF BRITAINS FEEBLE ATTEMPT AT SPACE EXPLORATION. I AM MAKING A JOKE AT MY OWN EXPENCE, LAUGHING AT MY OWN COUNTRY. IS THAT CLEAR TO YOU ALL?......SURE?......OK?

This is all another government farce.

Those pictures were done approximately like the HP commercials describe in jest.

Just to set all you gullible "Scientific" types straight, all this talk of mars, venus, mercury, jupiter, saturn (with it's fable of the "rings") and so on; ALL of that is just a bunch of lies begun by people who wanted funds from thier kings (and now their respective congresses) to build and play with assaninely expensive optics and telescopes.

I will be glad to put on a similar show for 375 million dollars. The country could have all the current excitement and save 25 million

First a probe, soon manned flights.....

Now if they can just get around to designing a new shuttle, and moon bases, and life on Europa, and....... *Stares off into stars*

Tip o'the hat to ya mate.......

I thought the lack of a "decent" atmosphere was more problematic in this regard, for absorption of gamma rays? Need my old astrophysics books...

That would certainly help, as electromagnetic waves like gamma are not affected by magnetism. However, alteration and retention of the atmosphere is theoretically feasible given known (and public) science; artificially generating a magnetic field isn't. At least, this is as far as I know. Anyone who knows more about magnetic fields than I do, is welcome to make a liar out of me. 🙂

Plus, terraforming on Mars is bound to fail all the time unless you also get a grip on how to change its gravitational field (definitely a dream given our scarce knowledge of what creates gravity in the first place!)

Gravitational field? This is because of the gravity being roughly a third of ours and not properly capable of holding onto an atmosphere comprised of an element as light as oxygen, right? (You gotta believe that Dave is thinking of Kessel right now! 😉 )

There is a widespread belief (like many widespread ones, it's completely and utterly wrong) that gravity is created or aided by axial rotation. Given that the Moon rotates a hell of a lot slower than the Earth, it shouldn't have anywhere near the 1/6 of terrestrial gravity that it does. It also doesn't explain why two warships floating next to each other in the ocean can generate a graitational (NOT magnetic) attraction between themselves of anywhere between 60 and 100 Newtons. This concept is largely responsible for the mistaken notion that if the Earth slowed to a stop that we'd all float off into space. Cobblers, poppycock, bollocks and tosh! 😀 If the Earth screeched to a halt in a second then certainly the force would throws us outwards, but the Earth's rotation on it's axis generates centrifugal force that is forcing us up into the air, not downwards towards the core! Mass attracts mass. Not sure why exactly, but it's bugger all to do with rotation. If the Earth slowed to a stop, our weight would actually increase. There is also evidence to suggest that in human history the Earth used to rotate in the other direction. This would have caused the sun to rise in the west and set in the east. The changes in direction seem to sync with the periodic "flipping" of the polarity of the magnetic poles.

and how to induce a permanent Marsmagnetic (for want of an equivalent term of "geomagnetic") field. Not to mention a few more details like lack of water (yes, there is some, but it wouldn't be enough considering how we waste it on Earth....)

Geomagnetic would still apply with a different planet. "Marsmagnetic" would be the equivalent of the term "Terramagnetic" as the Latin word "Terra" appertains to the Earth specifically (despite there being "continents" on Venus that have the word Terra in their names), whereas "Geo" applies to any planetoidal body. Perhaps nearly as important, if not more, would be the detection of a geomagnetic grid crossing and penetrating the planet's surface, as it does with ours. Geomantic/geomagnetic energy is very important for the ryhtyms our bodies and minds regulate themselves by. Mars will definately have one of some description, the question is whether or not it was as badly harmed as the one surrounding it.

lack of an ozone layer (because a magnetic field isn't enough, and how do we plan to manage and engineer the details of Martian atmospheric chemistry....??), a climate that would still be essentially harsh, and more and more and more...

If we could use an isotope of oxygen that is still metabolisable by animal life AND heavy enough to be retained by Martian gravity, it would be possible to increase the average Martian surface temperature to around 15 degrees celsius. As the Earth's is somewhere around 25, it would be uncomfortable, but not inhibitive. It would be possible to walk around on the surface without protection.

But it would be worth closer scientific investigation, so let's keep those pics coming by the byteloads and let's take that step from science fiction to geomorphology!! 😀

To infinity and beyond!!! 😀

Fine, fine, whatever...

...just somebody please wake my arse up when the Enterprise is being built, hmmm? 'Preciate it. 🙄

Twice in one day I am in COMPLETE agreement with Danimal! (I knew it was cold in New England, But I didnt think that H was freezing over.

(J/K Dan 🙄 )

I am afraid they will have to wake us from suspended animation before we see the likes of the Enterprise being built...🙁

Yes, indeed. Let's get on with the Enterprise, already! There's holodeck tickling to be done!

The heck with holodecks! Time to find some green-skinned alien women! Lord knows where THEY'RE ticklish at🙂

The Sean Man

Could've been worse. They could've all fallen asleep . . .

Opportunity lands safely....

At 12:05 Am 1/25/04 the second US probe has landed safely on Mars...

The first has sent back a ton of data to sift through and the second will be searching for evidence of water on the other side of the planet......

Okay Spirit! You had better get your act together. You've got competition. 🙂

They have actually been receiving data from Spirit again and are close to a complete fix...

Ray

Good to hear that Spirit is feeling better. Two rovers are better than one.
Welcome to Meridiani Planum. Looks vastly different from the Spirit's site. Not nearly as many large rocks.

IMHO I think there are way more things we should be worried about.

So, we see what's on Mars...great.

Could we get there in a reasonable amount of time, without risking the lives of NASA space crew? Not really.

We should've spent the money on how WE are going to get there, not some probe we're going to crash land on the planet, and hope that it makes it.

Don't get me wrong, but I still think it's interesting that we've seen what we've seen.

Well, good for all the money they spent which could of been used here for a more useful purpose.Atleast they got the darn thing to land on the right planet.:firedevil :firedevil :firedevil

:atom: We have starving children, why such the interest is water on Mars:atom:

BigJim: Yeah, whenever I can get a chance to read his stuff.
My dad reads his books all the time though.
