I've already told this to a few people, but, I figured that since I've posted bad news in regard to my mother's situation, I should also post when something positive occurs. Yesterday, something very positive did occur.
I've posted previously about how my mom decided to seek a second opinion from a doctor in NJ, who saved a woman, who was in last stage lung cancer. As I had mentioned before, the doctors in Lancaster had told my mom that she has "metastatic" cancer, that her only hope for treatment is chemo, and how they were giving her short time frames for her "death". Well, the NJ doctor ran his own battery of tests, and then consulted with his top team of over 30 doctors, who have the highest credentials in the world. Their findings were very different.
We visited the Dr in NJ yesterday, and his first words to us were "I have very good news". : According to his findings, my mom in fact has Stage 1 lung cancer, and NOT Stage 4, or "Metastatic". His orginization conducted extensive tests, that the doctors in Lancaster did not even do, and, his findings are that based upon my mom's condition, and the information he has, his option is to do surgery to deal with the cancer, before even embarking on radiation, or chemo. The Dr claims that even though my mom will have to undergo extensive surgical procedures, one of which will require a week or more hospital stay, and that such procedure, when combined with his treatment plan of radiation, and maybe, chemo, can effectively be a "cure", or at the least, a very long term treatment to keep the cancer arrested.
Needless to say, we were stunned, and elated, and began to cry from relief, when we heard this news. After six months of hearing only negativity from the Lancaster doctors, it was such a welcome relief to hear this wonderful news. When my mom asked him about the possiblity of her passing away, his answer was "We aren't going to talk about it. It isn't in the picture, and you're not in danger of dying, Sheila".
Now, the medical process begins. We have to go back up to NJ on Tuesday, for my mom to have another lung biopsy, and then discuss with the doctor about the exact treatment plan, surgery, and radiation, etc.
The Dr was honest with us. He said that the treatment is going to be a long road, and that there will be extensive treatment, tests, and perhaps pain. However, at the end of the day, his belief is that my mom is going to be fine. This was a welcome change, from what we had been hearing from the Lancaster doctors.
So, that's the current situation. I will post updates as needed. I am so relieved that my mom decided to do her treatment with this doctor. At the very least, we have every reason to believe that he will extend my mom's life for a very long time.
I should also mention that the doctor told us that his initial thought upon examining my mother, before even conducting the tests he did, was that "Something wasn't right" with the Lancaster doctors findings. The Lancaster doctors told us my mom has metastatic cancer, and yet, thank God, she doesn't even seem sick. She hasn't lost weight, her appetite is good, knock on wood, and any coughing blood has thankfully been minimal. Based on her symptoms, and lack thereof, and his findings, we have every reason to believe that his findings are the correct ones, and that the Lancaster doctors are and were dead wrong.
